Education Services • School visit and educational programmes are core services of the Museum • Aim at promoting science to students and supporting science learning for school groups • Develop and organize programmes for students with different levels on various topics of interest • Offer a wide variety of programmes including film shows, guided tours, laboratory activities and science demonstration during school visit sessions • Traveling exhibitions and Video recordings of science lecture on-loan to schools • Organize special programmes with special learning objectives with other institutions (e.g. Science Alive)
Secondary School Science Quiz Competition 243 students from 78 secondary schools in participation
Science Alive 2009 Science Alive is an annual science event jointly organised by the British Council, Education Bureau and the Museum, and sponsored by The Croucher Foundation. Taking ‘Beautiful Science’ as its theme, Science Alive 2009 included: • Interactive Science Lectures presented by U.K. scientists (17 – 20 Nov) • FameLab – Science Communication Competition (21 Nov) • Science Walkabout Shows ‘Science Busking’ (21 – 25 Nov) • Science Demonstration Shows ‘Crisp Packet Fireworks!’ by The Naked Scientists(21,22 Nov) • Teacher Workshops delivered by Science Made Simple (23,24 Nov) Science Alive 2009 received 3,661 audiences including teachers, students & members of the public
Docent Services • Services provided from March 1992. Around 200 docents are now on the service pool • Explain exhibits and conduct guided tours for students and visitors, • Support various kinds of educational programmes & extension activities • In 2009, 2,741 guided tours were arranged for 66,195 visitors
Science Demonstrations • Run by museum assistants during opening hours • On show at demonstration theatre, exhibition halls, lecture hall and museum lower piazza • More than 10 topics are available for presentation • In 2009, 1,978 demonstrations were performed with 84,365 audiences
Supplementary Visit Materials • Visit planning materials for teachers • Teacher guide • Student worksheet • Pre-visit activity guide • Education Newsletter The materials are free for teachers to plan their visit and to develop learning materials for their students.
School Visit Statistics (2005-09) * A significant drop in attendance was due to the threat of swine flu infection between May and July 09. The attendance figure of 2008 in the period was 40,185 (from 452 schools) whereas the figure in 2009 was 16,695 (from 221 schools)
Teacher Programmes • To introduce museum services and resources available to teachers through orientation programmes • To promote teachers’ understanding on the contents of museum permanent / special exhibitions • To provide special workshops to teachers on special topics of science • To work with Education Bureau to organize training workshop for teachers
Traveling Exhibitions • To promote science to schools & local community • Loan out exhibits for a period between 4 to 7 days • Schools arrange to pick up exhibition materials and setup by their own • Five exhibitions are available for booking: • Ask Professor Water (問問水教授) - for Secondary School • Optical Illusions (幻影) - for Secondary School • SARS and Viruses (沙士與病毒) - for Secondary School • Love the Everest, Love our Earth (親親珠峰 – 親親地球 ) - for Kindergarten • Care of your Eyes (謢理眼睛) - for Primary School • In 2009, 19 exhibitions were held with 7,305 visitors
