  2. Adult Diabetes Research • Dr Ahmed, Principal Investigator • Vas Vasudevan, Diabetes Research Nurse • Established in Dec 2011. Based in Clinical Research Centre, BTH. • Working towards DOH – NIHR plan to improve health and wealth of the nation through research. Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

Diabetes Resaerch • So far • 1 in 3 patients attended diabetes clinic were informed about diabetes research activities in BTH. • (DoH White paper 2010) • Recruited to target • Improving patient involvement • Helped to promote and conduct research as core role in the BTH • Helped to raise research awareness amongst staff, patient and public. Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

  4. Diabetes Research Studies • DARE – Adult • ADDRESS 1 - Paediatric • ADDRESS-2 – Adult and Paediatric • TRIALNET - Relatives of T1DM patients Adult and paediatric • EPIC - Paediatric Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

DARE • Aim – to produce a research database of all patients with diabetes. • To produce a DNA repository of all diabetes patients • Target – 500 patients per year • Single visit, optional blood sample, questionnaire • Recruitment started in dec2011, recruited 250 so far • Data stored for • Samples stored for indefinite period Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

TrialNet • To recruit first degree relatives of T1DM patients, between 5 and 45 years. • Aim – to determine the risk for the occurance of T1DM using different tests. • Looking to commence recruiting post July 2012 - 2015 • Blood samples and data collected, if antibodies are present, participants will be invited for further investigations. Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

ADDRESS 2 • After Diabetes Diagnosis REsearchSupport System-2 • To recruit newly diagnosed T1DM patients and their non-diagnosed siblings. • Data Collection and optional blood sample • Follow up data is recorded 3mth and 6mth post consent only but stored up to 10 years • Tosupport future research into the development of Type 1 diabetes and its prevention • Recruited 4 adults, and 12 newly diagnosed children await being approached for research Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

Paediatric Diabetes Research Team • Dr Rabin Mohanty, Principal Investigator • Angela Waktare Paediatric Diabetes Research Nurse • and • Sandra Singleton Paediatric Diabetes Research Nurse • Established in Jan 2010, based in Clinical Research Centre, BVH. Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

The“EPIC” Project Study Overview Study Completion To develop and evaluate an age appropriate education pack to support decision making and self care relating to insulin management and blood glucose monitoring. The information packets are for: 6-10 years 11-15 years 16-18 years • Closed March 2012 • Exceeded target recruited to the study (26) • 3mth questionnaires and • 6mth questionnaires completed • First study undertaken by the Team • Positive feedback within a shorter recruitment time Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

ADDRESS 1 • After Diagnosis REsearchSupport System • A database of clinical measures post diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes only • Data is recorded 6mth post diagnosis then yearly till 5 years post diagnosis. • Currently 11 children recruited • All data is recorded from clinical records post initial consent Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes

  11. Paediatric Diabetes • 16 newly diagnosed children await being approached for research • Families are open to new developments which can improve care to their child • Research creates a positive talking point where their child is the centre • Families feel empowered as their contribution is essential to the success in recruiting to the trial and their information is invaluable to participating in the study Identifies new ways to prevent, identify and treat diabetes
