What is workplace mapping? • A leadership team activity to create a physical depiction of the worksite that illustrates presence and physical proximity of workers by such factors as membership or activist status, age/seniority, job title, assessment status, social relationships, etc. • Once created, a map gives us a look at selected data from a bird’s eye view and provides a starting point for a strategic discussion of organizing. Has anyone had prior experience in worksite mapping?
Sample worksite map analysis: • What do you see depicted in this sample? • What observations can be made based on what is depicted in the map? • How might this information help inform plans for more effective organizing? • What else might be helpful to know and map in this sample?
So, now let’s talk about putting this all together to meet the objectives of this training . . . . How are you going to build membership density, commitment and activism?
Objective: UTD Stewards will develop an internal organizing plan for the 2011-2012 school year. The organizing plan will include: • Membership retention conversations with all new members (enrolled since January 2011) during the first two weeks of the new school term; • Membership recruitment conversations with at least 50 percent of all remaining potential members during the first two months of school; • Identification and recruitment of members to assist in making the retention and recruitment conversations, ideally one per every 10 people to be contacted; • Identification and recruitment of activists for legislative and political mobilization; • A calendar that shows specific dates and times for regular worksite meetings for the entire school year. • Actions to boost union visibility at the worksite.
