Senior profile & resume Senior Profile Needs to be completed by all seniors. It is used for: • recommendations • Scholarship nominations Resume • A listing of clubs, organizations involved • Employment • Community service hours • List Any trips abroad • Awards/accomplishments/ special achievements

Definitions of Admission Options Non-Restrictive Applications Students are not restricted from applying to other institutions and have until May 1st to consider their options and confirm enrollment Restrictive Applications Students are responsible for determining and following restrictions

College Entrance Exams • SAT www.collegeboard.org • ACT www.actstudent.org • Community College Placement Testing • Most colleges/universities require the SAT or ACT • Most colleges/universities will accept either the SAT or ACT • Students may choose to submit both the SAT and the ACT • Some colleges/universities allow students to apply without SAT/ACT*

Registering for the SAT or ACT online 1.) Log on to the website (feel free to come use the Counseling Center’s computers!) 2.) Register for the test by looking at the test date and location 3.) Pay for the test using a credit card or fee waiver 4.) Get your confirmation number Afterwards….. Log into your account to check scores, send scores to colleges, and find study tips for taking the test again *All Jrs took the ACT in Feb 2018 – set up acct and link scores

You Should Also Know… • Fee Waivers are available to students who qualify (see your School Counselor) • 2 for SAT and 2 for SAT Subject Tests • 2 for the ACT • College application fee waivers* *waivers are posted in students’ College Board acct • Students with disabilities may request accommodations • Please see your Counselor for details • Plan ahead, this process takes some time

What Else Does Your Application Say About You? Recommendation letters (Senior Profile) • 2 – 3 (Academic teacher, counselor, community) Discipline History • OSS/ISS Class Choices (including senior year!) • Academic Rigor Mid Year Transcript • Maintain Grades/GPA
Recommendations • Complete the senior profile and resume • Identify teachers, advisors, coaches, employers who know you well and think highly of you • Ask in advance. Give recommenders time to complete your recommendation (at least 2 weeks to complete) • provide a stamped, addressed envelope along with the request **if mailing • Most recommenders save the initial and welcome additional requests
THE Essay • The college & University’s chance to learn more about you • Make sure you are responding to the prompt • Express yourself – Be creative - Funny and quirky is good but not too much • Have an English teacher or someone Proof-read – guidance can also help • Give yourself time to Create a draft and edit as needed
HIGH SCHOOL TRANSCRIPT • Hardcopy/mail - Request your transcript Through the Counseling Office • Request your transcript at least 2 weeks prior to application deadlines • Don’t to forget to include any counselor forms • First 2 requests free, additional $2 • CommonAPP/CFNC transcript (Upload) • Mid-Year Transcripts (free) • Scholarship Transcripts (free) • FINAL TRANSCRIPT sent mid-June (FREE)
NC College Application weekoct 15-19, 2018 • Goal for every student to apply to at least 2-4 colleges • Many college application fees are waived • All community colleges in North Carolina are free to apply • On-site admissions and scholarship offers • Military recruitment

NC Residency Determination Service (RDS) To qualify for in-state tuition & state-based financial aid, a student must prove legal residence. • Complete RDS information • Initial consideration – most students will stop here. • Confirm residency thru cfncaccT or create an express acct • Provide documentation w/n 25 days • Receive resident or non-resident status • Reconsideration – need resubmit/correct errors or missed the deadline • RDS Appeal – if receive “non-resident” status • SEAA Statewide appeal committee – disagree w/ RDS appeal decision

FAFSA - Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Must file to determine eligibility for all federal and most state aid for year entering college • File online form after October 1, 2018 • FAFSA on the Web (www.fafsa.ed.gov) • Use www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov to project eligibility • Some scholarship opportunities require the FAFSA
CSS/Financial Aid Profile • Required by some colleges/universities and scholarships • Davidson, Duke, Elon, UNC-CH, & Wake Forest • Required by some scholarship organizations • Fee-$25 (initial fee & 1st institution + $16 for each add’t institution) • Register and complete Profile at www.collegeboard.org at least two weeks before first priority deadline

Scholarship Search Tips • Make sure your email address is up-to-date in the Counseling Office for when we send out email Scholarship Updates! • Look on the Mt. Tabor Counseling Website to view the scholarship updates from previous years to get an idea about what scholarships are available • Broaden your search at the beginning of senior year • Be diligent throughout your senior year • Select opportunities that fit you best • Be realistic about the number of applications you can complete • Do not give up! • Think about local resources

PREPARE FOR YOUR SENIOR MEETING WITH YOUR COUNSELOR • Take time to discuss your college planning goals with family members. • Be able to discuss your tentative career goals. • Generate a list of questions relative to the college admissions process and/or your post high school goals. • Have a realistic list of 3 to 5 schools in which you have an interest. • Know your academic credentials such as GPA & previous test scores.
