  2. Overview • What’s AGEC? • How does AGEC affect students after transfer? • How does AGEC affect community college students? • How does AGEC affect community college advisors? • How does AGEC affect university advisors?

What’s AGEC? • “Arizona General Education Curriculum” • At least 35 credits • Core requirements – composition, mathematics, arts & humanities, social and behavioral sciences, lab sciences, options • Awareness areas – intensive writing & critical inquiry, global awareness, cultural awareness, historical awareness • AGEC-A, B & S differ only with respect to math & science • AGEC satisfies all lower-division general education requirements at the university • AGEC programs subject to review by the General Education Articulation Task Force.

  4. AGEC and Student Success • Do students who complete an AGEC have comparable success at the university as do students who complete university general education programs? • Do they have comparable GPAs? • Do they graduate at comparable rates? • Current research between Pima & UA

AGEC and Community College Students • AGEC is a core of the community college curriculum • All transfer associate’s degrees are built around the AGEC • Associate in Arts, Business and Science • AGEC allows students to explore possible majors • Supports both decided and undecided students • AGEC provides key ‘guarantees’ for transfer students • AGEC allows students to gain crucial academic skills that help them succeed at the university

AGEC and Community College Advisors • Advisors use AGEC as a map for student success • For undecided students, completing an AGEC is a way to explore different majors. • For decided students, completing an AGEC is a way to prepare for major coursework as well • Advisors use AGEC course lists along with University Transfer Guides to identify best strategies for students • AGEC and the major!

AGEC and University Advisors • Advisors work with students who have already completed the AGEC • Awareness of the benefits of AGEC completion is crucial • ‘You shouldn’t have done the AGEC!’ - But look at AGEC completers’ success rates! • What if a student took the ‘wrong’ AGEC for their major? • Advisors work with students who may be in the process of completing an AGEC at the community college • University general education courses may transfer and apply to the AGEC
