  1. Rural Placements The old system of rural undergraduate education was one of apprenticeship. For various reasons, the apprenticeship system is no longer acceptable. An adequate replacement system has yet to be developed and put into place.

  2. Major Factors Leading to the Need for a Change in the System Changes in… • The General Practitioners • The Students • The Curriculum

  3. Environment • Welcoming culture • Student should feel included • Students need to be enthusiastic & contribute • Students matched to practices

  4. Curriculum • Continuing development • Integration, vertically and horizontally • Registrar • CPD / OTD • Inter-university • Inter-discipline

  5. Ideal Model • Active learning • Student sees patient • Student presents to doctor • Portfolio approach

  6. GP Support • Local contact person • Adequate briefing • Student’s date of arrival • Teacher training • Adequate and correct payment

  7. Accommodation • Close to practice • Close to town • Privacy • Facilities • Room and equipment in practice

  9. Funding • Accommodation • Reintroduction of ACCOG • Community Partnership/groups • Ongoing costs • Organisation • Payment to the correct people
