Industrial Placement Team Professor Jonathan Percy (TG404) Professor Rein Uljin (TG607) Dr. Mark Spicer (R614) Dr. Ed Cussen (TG506) Mrs. Helen Paton (TG204)
M.Sci. students • an industrial placement is a mandatory, assessed part of the MSci course (it is worth 6 credits) • B.Sc. students • an industrial placement is not a course requirement for progress into final year and as such BSc students will not normally undertake an industrial placement. • The information discussed today is for • MSci students only.
Update your CVs as necessary • summer work experience? • new address, telephone no., e-mail address? • If instructed to by an IP coordinator • updated CVs to Helen Paton ASAP
What will happen now? • You MUST attend a talk on ‘Interview • Techniques’. Given by Katrina Forbes • of the Careers Office (date to be • arranged)
What will happen now? • Every MSci student will then be interviewed by an industrial placement coordinator. • Chance to give your own views/thoughts, be honest (e.g., no point in saying you like an area of chemistry if you don’t!!). • IP Team then sift through your forms to • see where your strengths and weaknesses lie.
What will happen now? • The IP team will help to find appropriate • opportunities for you. • Over 40 companies already work with the IP team. • Remember the main responsibility in securing an Industrial Placement rests • WITH YOU!!!
What will happen now? • Be under NO illusions. Some companies have very stringent application criteria that we can do nothing about. • In some situations we will only recommend students with certain academic qualifications to apply.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY • If an IP co-ordinator does identify a potential position for you, need to act FAST. • Many application forms have tight deadlines within the first 2 weeks in Oct! • Opportunities can be missed if you do not respond within a tight deadline (days).
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY • Need to check your emails and the TV screen in the foyer DAILY. • No response will mean that another student will take your place. • The IP co-ordinator will help you with your application.
BE UNDER NO ILLUSIONS • The IP team will help you to secure an industrial placement. • But they CANNOT GUARANTEE a placement. • It is a competitive world!
BE UNDER NO ILLUSIONS • Some placements demand 1st class students (they ask to see your marks!!) • Some companies also want to know your 2nd year laboratory marks. • There are 100 MSci students at Strathclyde, • also competing with students from other Universities in the UK.
TIMESCALES • Some companies have very quick deadlines and you may find that some of your friends secure placements in Oct. • Other companies look for placements later (as late as May/June). • The timescale for each student is difficult to estimate – DO NOT WORRY!
ORGANISATION • Note that we work as a TEAM. Your co-ordinator will change depending on the position(s) you apply for. • Keep up-to-date with the IP co-ordinator for individual position(s), or even for an update. • Any problems contact Professor Jonathan Percy or Mrs Helen Paton.
THE PROCESS • Expect to go for more than one interview (sometimes 3 or 4). We often send a few candidates for one position so it is inevitable that you may not secure a position immediately. • Try not to compare yourself with your peers! • Application process will vary.
SUCCESS !! • If the company likes your application you will • be invited to an interview. • Interviews are conducted here at Strathclyde or on-site. • If on-site, Helen Paton will help to organise all your travel and accommodation details if necessary (you will not be out of pocket).
REVIEW PROCESS • After the Jan diet of exams there will be a review of students still requiring placement. • Students with > 3 resits: PROBLEM! • At that stage it is likely the IP team will strongly encourage you to find your own placement. • Final review in summer. Students will be interviewed • after the August resits and the situation will be reviewed again.
Actions • Update your CVs • Attend “Interview Techniques” presentation by the Careers Service • Check interview schedules • Look out for placements FINALLY, we often work to tight deadlines so efficient communication is essential!
