  2. Comparatives • You have learned mas and menos in certain expressions.

  3. Comparatives • Me gusta el tenis pero me gusta más el fútbol. • Te gustan las manzanas? Si, más o menos.

  4. Comparatives • We also use mas / menos + adjective + qué (‘than’) to make comparisons.

  5. Comparatives • mas / menos + adjective + qué • Los discos compactos de Los Toros son más populares que los discos compactos de Los Lobos.

  7. Comparatives • The adjectives agree with the nouns they refer to.

  8. Comparatives • The adjectives bueno, malo, viejo, and joven have irregular comparative forms. We do not use más with them.

  10. Comparatives • Mejor, peor, mayor, and menor have plural forms ending in -es. However, they don’t have a different feminine form:

  12. Comparatives • Mejor (better) is also the comparative form of bien (well), and peor (worse) also the comparative form of mal (badly).

  17. The Verb PODER • The verb PODER means “to be able to” or “can”

  18. The Verb PODER • Remember, in Spanish all verbs have two parts, the stem and the ending.

  19. The Verb Poder • For example POD is the stem • ER is the ending…thus makes PODER

  20. Stem Changing Verbs • PODER is what we call a “stem-changing verb”.

  21. Stem Changing Verbs • The “stem” is what changes, so the stem POD changes the “o” to “ue” in all forms except the nosotros.

  22. Stem Changing Verbs • So instead of POD, you have PUED. • The endings follow the regular ‘er’ endings.

  26. Uses of PODER • When the forms of PODER are followed by another verb, the second verb is always an infinitive.

  27. Uses of PODER For example: No puedo ir al cine contigo el viernes.

  28. Let’s review PODER again and remember, you do NOT change the nosotros or the vosotros forms!

  30. DORMIR • The verb DORMIR is very similar to PODER. It means “to sleep.”

  31. DORMIR • DORMIR is a “stem-changing” verb. • It is an “o > ue” stem-changing verb.

  32. DORMIR • The stem of “dormir” is… • “dorm” • What changes? “duerm”

  33. DORMIR • DORMIR follows regular “-ir” endings. • o, es, e, imos, ís, en

  34. DORMIR • All forms change except the nosotros form. Let’s see!

  38. Superlatives • In English, Superlatives are when we use adjectives with an “est” as a suffix. • For example, the fastest runner, the tallest girl, etc.

  39. Superlatives • Memorize this formula: • el/la/los/las + noun + más/menos+ adjective

  40. Superlatives • el/la/los/las + noun + más/menos+ adjective • This formula is used to say that someone is “the most” or “the least” of a group.

  41. Superlatives • For example, • La foto de mi familia es la posesión más importante para mi.

  42. Superlatives • Los colores más bonitos • In Spanish, it says “the colors most pretty.” • In English we would say, “the prettiest colors” with “est.”

  43. Superlatives • To say that someone is “the best” or “the worst” we use el/la mejor and el /la peor. These come before the noun.

  44. Superlatives • Pienso que Gonzalo Ochoa es el mejor estudiante. • Also, for example, “el peor estudiante,” “la mejor niña”

  45. Superlatives • To say “the most” or “the best” of a group, use “de” • For example

  46. Superlatives • Para mi, Eduardo es el peor estudiante de todas. • Margarita es la mejor estudiante de la clase.
