  2. Orientation & training • How did you feel your first day on the job? • First impressions are everything • Where do I fit in? • Invest the time • Expectation Sheet • Do they understand their duties? • Scavenger hunt training exercise • Survey training exercise • Training games

Follow up • Great, your new student is trained, now you can kick back and relax, nope! • Ask questions • Check their work • Training Checklist • Performance Reviews (student evaluation by supervisor, self evaluation by student, supervisor evaluation by student)—yes, regular, scheduled performance reviews

  4. communication • Acknowledge successes immediately • Coach them on improvements immediately • Be specific when coaching or taking corrective action measures • Use the term “we” • Give them attainable goals and the tools to get there • Keep students informed of things going on in your division • Make students part of the decision making process

  5. Recognition & rewards • No money? What else is there? • Cyber Café gift card or other free to inexpensive reward • Interesting and new tasks • Assisting in training new co-workers • Create teams to work together on special projects • “Promotion” to new job title and duties • Outstanding Student Assistant Award • Student Assistant Appreciation Week • “Thank you,” “Great work on project X!” • Other resume boosters?

Be that kind of supervisor! • Be consistent • Be a mentor • Have staff meetings F2F or online • Take the time to get to know your students • Recognize birthdays or the completion of a large project • Stay motivated or get motivated! • Buy into the company mission • Negative attitudes are contagious • Morale
