Intake Survey • Fill out the following parts of the blue form: • Student Bio Information • All but last question • Student Demographics • SSN, Ethnicity, employment, high school, last grade, citizenship, native language • Permissions (Page 3) • District Payer • Post secondary experience?
Introductions • Your name • Grade • School • Favorite movie and why • Favorite book and why • Favorite time period and why • Interesting fact about yourself
Survey • On a piece of lined paper, please answer the following questions so that I can learn a little bit more about you as a student. 1. What subject do you do best at in school? Why? 2. How would you describe yourself as a student? 3. What do you hope to get out of this course (besides a passing grade)? 4. What are you good at in English? 5. What do you most want to get better at in English?

Supplies • You will need a notebook and folder / binder • You will be receiving a lot of handouts and doing a lot of in-class writing. • Pen / pencil • Highlighter / colored pen
Class Expectations • You must complete 54 hours in order to receive credit for the course. • If you miss one class, you will have the opportunity to make up the class. • If you miss more than one class, you will lose credit for the course. • Be respectful • Do your own work • Participate & Ask Questions • Read the book
What you can expect… • Reading outside of class • All writing, analyzing, etc. will be done within the classroom itself • We will be writing an essay at the end of the course, but that will be done over several class periods in class. • We will be busy! There will be close reading and discussion and media and historical connections…it will expand beyond just discussing the book.
Writing Samples • To get a sense of how you write, especially if I haven’t taught you before, it’s important to get a writing sample. • Choose one of the quotes below to write a response to. Do you agree or disagree? Break Time • Each class we will take a 10 minute break part way through the class. • Stretch your legs, run to the restroom, buy a drink, etc. • You must be back in 10 minutes to start again. • If you all as a class do not adhere to the 10 minute break, we will discontinue having them. (We all want a 10 minute break! Ms. Kiehl wants to get her coffee!)
Text Introduction – Journal Prompt • Respond to both of the following questions. Each day you will find a Journal Prompt on the board for you to answer. • What does it mean to be patriotic? • Is it better to be a coward and live or die fighting for your country?
World War II • Brainstorm a list of everything you know about WWII • Think of people, battles, style of fighting, axis powers, ally powers, etc. anything • We will create a class list of what we know to prepare us for the novel.

WWII Bombardiers • What was the primary job of a bombardiers? • What kind of person do imagine would take this job? What would they be like? • Why were bombardiers crucial to the war effort?
Opening of the Novel • As we read page one, highlight/underline anything that stands out to you. • What do we know about our main character, Yossarian? • What is going in on in the novel? • Why might Joseph Heller begin the novel this way?
Deciding on a Schedule • Our goal is to finish the course at the end of May. • Your choices: • Date and time that work best for you • Do you want to have 2 classes a week to start or to end (when we’re working on the essay)?
Homework • Read chapters 1 – 4 • Read thoroughly and carefully. Come ready to talk about what happened and any questions you have. • Note: the time line in the novel is not linear.
