  1. COOLING SYSTEM IN IC ENGINES

  2. Cooling System An automobile’s Cooling system is to maintain the engine’s temperature at optimal levels.

  3. Types Of Cooling System

  4. Air Cooling System Air flows over cooling fins around the outside of the cylinder and head by the natural motion of the vehicle.

  5. Air Cooling System

  6. LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM

  7. Liquid Cooling System An Liquid Cooling system is the collection of parts and substances (coolants) that work together to maintain the engine’s temperature at optimal levels.

  8. Liquid cooling system parts

  10. Coolant Passage

  11. Water pump A water pump is a simple device that will keep the coolant moving as long as the engine is running.  It is usually mounted on the front of the engine and turns whenever the engine is running. .

  12. WaterPump

  13. Radiator Radiator is used to cool the coolant delivered from the engine. The radiator core is usually made of flattened aluminum tubes with aluminum strips that zigzag between the tubes.  These fins transfer the heat in the tubes into the air stream to be carried away from the vehicle

  14. Radiator

  15. Thermostat • The thermostat is simply a valve that measures the temperature of the coolant and, if it is hot enough, opens to allow the coolant to flow through the radiator.  If the coolant is not hot enough, the flow to the radiator is blocked and fluid is directed to a bypass system that allows the coolant to return directly back to the engine.

  16. Thermostat Valve

  17. Radiator Fan • The radiator fan has blades that spin rapidly to provide sufficient air that would cool the engine. It is usually mounted between the radiator and the engine so that the air can easily get to the radiator.

  18. Radiator Fans

  19. Radiator Pressure Cap The radiator pressure cap is a simple device that will maintain pressure in the cooling system up to a certain point.  If the pressure builds up higher than the set pressure point, there is a spring loaded valve, to release the pressure.

  22. Radiator Hose There are several rubber hoses that make up the plumbing to connect the components of the coolingsystem.  The main hoses are called the upper and lower radiator hoses.  Materials :EPDM(Ethylene propylene diene monomer), Nitrile rubber & Neoprene rubber

  24. Heater Core In Heater Core hot coolant is used to provide heat to the interior of the vehicle when needed.

  26. Coolant The coolant in today's vehicles is a mixture of ethylene glycol (antifreeze) and water.  The recom-mended ratio is fifty-fifty.
