  1. Bewitching Students An Introduction to Literacy Using Harry Potter

  2. Purpose and Intended Audience • The unit plan was designed with the idea that pleasure books are the most effective way to increase academic language, vocabulary and thinking skills. • The unit plan can be used as a tool for students below a proficient reading level beginning in 8th grade.

  3. Guiding Questions • How can young adult fiction, such as Harry Potter, be used to make literary analysis accessible to reluctant readers? • What strategies can be used to teach Honors, EL and Special Education students the same texts?

  4. The Journey • Experiences prompted me to believe that popular fiction can be used to create fundamental literacy in students who struggle with reading. • In school districts with high levels of students below proficiency level there is no room for innovation.

  5. Unit Plan Features

  6. The Gains • There must always be a plan for deepening student knowledge. • Every generation has their own literary phenomenon. • Persistence and assistance is key.

  7. Future Plans • Continued improvement of unit plan as teaching experience continues. • Convert from State Standards to Common Core. • Possible implementation as an after school or academic skills class.
