  1. Brief History of National Service • 1964 Economic Opportunity Act – Pres. Lyndon Johnson’s “War of Poverty” (implemented JFK idea) • VISTA was created (2,000 members in 1965 to 6,500 members today) • 1990 National Service Act – President George H.W. Bush • Designed to increase number of volunteers in America • Gives grants for increasing service-learning in schools/colleges

  2. 1993 National & Community Service Trust Act – President Bill Clinton • Corporation for National & Community Service established • AmeriCorps established • 20,000 Members; $4,725 education award • 2003 Strengthen AmeriCorps Program Act – President George W. Bush • Doubled the number of AmeriCorps members • 2009 Ted Kennedy Serve America Act – President Barack Obama • Increase to 250,000 AmeriCorps members • Education Award increased and tied to Pell Grant
