What is Chemistry? Chemistry is … the study of the composition and properties of matter.
What is matter? Matter is … anything that has mass and takes up space.
Matter surrounds us in the form of solids, liquids, and gases. All matter, regardless of its size, shape, or color, is made of particles that are too small to be seen by the unaided eye.
Atoms • ATOM-the basic unit of matter. • An atom is made up of 3 parts… • Protron (+ charge) • Neutron (no charge) • Electron (- charge)
Elements • ELEMENT-the specific name of an atom. • An element is distinguished by its atomic number (the number of protons it has).
Molecules • Bonds are attractions between atoms that tightly hold the molecule together. MOLECULE- made up of two or more atoms that are held together through bonds.
A Simple Molecule • Water (H20) • 2 hydrogen atoms • 1 oxygen atom
Another Simple Molecule • Ethane (C2H6) • 2 carbon atoms • 4 hydrogen atoms
A Polymer… More Complex The polymer “polyethylene” consists of many ethane molecules.
What is a Polymer? • Polymers are made of many molecules strung together to form really long chains. • Polymers can occur in nature or they can be man-made.
What is a polymer? • These long polymer chains are formed by teeny tiny molecules called monomers. • A single polymer molecule is made out of hundred of thousands (or even millions!) of monomers!
Today we will… • Measure ingredients in a formula. • Create a polymer. • Convert fractions to decimals and percents. • Have fun with math and science!

Ethane • First discovered in 1834. • A component of natural gas.
Butane • Liquid form • Found in LPG bottles used in gas grills
Paraffin • Waxy solid • Used in candles and has a low melting point
Polyethylene • Solid • This is everyday plastic—milk jugs, detergent bottles, or any plastic
