SITUATIONS OF THE TERRITORY • Kingdom of SIAM until 1939 • Constitutional Monarchy since 1932 • 60 million inhabitants across an area of 513,000 square km • The only one to avoid colonization
4 GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS • NORTH • NORTHEAST • CENTRAL • Eastern • Central plain • SOUTH
NORTH REGION • Mountain ranges, consist of natural forests, narrow alluvial valleys. • Chiangmai, the 2nd largest city of Thailand
NORTHEAST REGION • Khorat Plateau • Rolling surface and rolling hills • Severe climatic conditions often result in flooding and draught
EASTERN • Many high hills • Many well known islands and sea resorts such as Pattaya and Samet Island
CENTRAL PLAIN • Densely populated • The basin of the Chao Phraya River • The richest rice producing area in the country • It is the home of Bangkok, the capital of the country (the biggest city)
SOUTH REGION • The Peninsula or the Southern • Mountainous, with forests and rich deposits of minerals • The center of rubber production

TOURISM p18 • Thailand is the 18th most popular world tourist destination and the 3rd destination in ASIA record as of 1996 with 7.2 million foreign visitors.

A TOLERANT KINGDOM: Religion and People • 95% Buddhism despite the freedom of religion • One of the last Theravada Buddhist monarchies • Sunni Islam, the 2nd religion • Chinese-Thais dominate and are influential in Thailand. • Of 22 Prime Ministers since 1932, at least 14 have been Chinese origin.

MIGRATION PERIOD • 11TH Century, Thais migrated from Yunna in Southern China • A desire for greater independence and better farmland. • Conflicting Thai origin theory to the evidence: the evidence of older artifacts
SUKHOTHAI PERIOD • 13th TO 15th Centuries (1238-1378) King Si Inthrathit, 1st Thai Kingdom SUKHOTHAI. • 3RD Reign, King Ramkhamhaeng the Great, the kingdom expanded dramatically. He invented the Thai alphabet in 1283.
AYUTTHAYA PERIOD • Lasted for 417 years (1350-1767). King U-Thong. From small city to great capital. • Was under Burma for 15 years then regain independence by Prince Naresuan in 1584 who later became King Naresuan the Great. • Fell to the Burmese again in 1767. Taksin, a military officer expel the Burmese and built a new capital.
THONBURI PERIOD • Lasted 15 years (1767-1782). King Taksin. • He never had time to build his capital into a great city because of the enemy. • Liberator of the country, a warrior and brave man
RATTANAKOSIN PERIOD • 1782 to the present. King Rama 1 founded the Chakri dynasty and moved to the capital across the river calling it BANGKOK. • King Rama IV (King Mongkut) ‘The King and I.’ Negotiated treaties with the European Powers, introduced modern science, kingdom reforms • King Rama V followed his father’s reforms further. • Abolished slavery, reorganized government systems, built railways. • The first Thai King to travel Europe. • Able to preserve his country’s independence.
A UNIQUE MONARCHY • His Majesty King BhumibolAdulyadej or King Rama IX of the Chakri dynasty acceded to the throne on 9th June 1946. • A man of many talents!
THE FLAG • King Rama VI introduced the tri-color flag in place of the earlier white elephant. • The outer bands of red signify the nation, the inner bands of white represent religion. The blue band signifies the monarchy.
CLIMATE • Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate with a high degree of humidity. • Rainy Season lasts from May to October, cool season from November to February, the remainder is the hot season. Highest temperature in March and April. Lowest in December.
