Paraphrase Clinic ENGL 110
What counts as paraphrase? • Not this: • Original: Sending nude or seminude pictures, a phenomenon known as sexting, is a growing trend among teens (Feyerick). • Bad paraphrase: Electronically delivering naked or semi-naked photographs, an action referred to as sexting, is on the rise in the young adult population (Feyerick).
What counts? • A paraphrase should be written in your own language and sentence structure. • Any borrowed phrases or words from the original should be put in quotes. • A paraphrase should accurately express the original information.
Accuracy Matters “An ugly, expensive campaign for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court is but the latest example of what is now common in judicial elections: millions of dollars in misleading television ads, subsidized by lobbies that have cases before the bench.” The recent Wisconsin Supreme Court election is another exhibit showing how expensive electing state justices has become. (leaves out?)
Why is paraphrasing so cool? • It keeps you from quoting too frequently in your paper • It makes you really think through the ideas you are presenting • It allows you to make useful information mesh better with your paper
How to paraphrase • It’s not word-by-word translation • Read the sentence(s) you are paraphrasing (take note of some of the words if you want to) • Remove the original from your sight • Write down your paraphrase • Compare it with the original to make sure it is accurate • Put quotes around any unique words or phrases that you borrowed from the original (or change them)
Clinic • In pairs, discuss the meaning of the sentences you are given. • Individually, write a paraphrase • In pairs, check the accuracy and lack of plagiarism (Instructor note: ask for volunteers and evaluate theirs as a class, criteria on board)
