Virginia • Population – grew, then declined b/c of disease and difficult living conditions, then grew when death rate dropped
Conflicts with Native Americans • Farmers took over more land to plant tobacco. • Two violent confrontations between Native • Americans and colonists • Colonists won. • Native Americans had to accept English rule.
Bacon’s Rebellion • Wealthy tobacco planters bought all good land • No land for poor colonists on coast • Young men angry – without property they could not vote • Poor colonists moved inland (farmers) • Fighting broke out with Native Americans • Frontier farmers demanded governor protect them
Bacon’s Rebellion cont. • Governor hesitated • Nathaniel Bacon – leader of frontier farmers led revolt known as Bacon’s Rebellion • Bacon became sick and died. Followers were hanged. • Governor could not stop settlers from moving on Native American land.
Maryland • Founded by George Calvert • Wanted safe place for Catholics • Lord Baltimore (Calvert’s son) got assembly to pass Act of Toleration welcomed all Christians gave adult male Christians right to vote and hold office
Carolinas • Northern part of Carolina (farmers) grew slower than southern part (planters) • North Carolina – lacked harbors and rivers farmers raised tobacco • South Carolina – planters grew rice and sugar used slave labor
Georgia • Last of 13 colonies • Founded b/c feared Spain’s expansion and wanted protection for English debtors • James Oglethorpe – wanted debtors(people who owe money) to have a 2nd chance
Tidewater Region • Along the coast • Had plantations (large farms) which grew rice sugar and cotton • Promoted slavery • Plantation system created: slaveholders slaves poor whites
The Backcountry • Cut off from coast by poor roads and long distances • People lived on isolated farms • Lived simple, poor lives • Believed colonial governments on coast did not care about them
