Role of Partner 7- IPGRI Contribute to objective 4 of CRYMCEPT project: Validation of the improved cryopreservation and their application to European germplasm collections
WP9 Objectives • Disseminate improved cryopreservation protocol and analytical techniques to relevant European research institutes and genebanks through organization of two specialized training courses • To provide policy makers first hand information on potential of new cryopreservation protocols.
Milestone • Improved cryopreservation protocols and analytic techniques disseminated to scientists and technical staff from relevant research institute and genebanks
Deliverables • D9.1 General recommendations for the utilization of plant cryopreservation in germplasm collections described in a cryopreservation manual (month 36) • D9.2 The implementation of two specialized training courses in cryopreservation techniques (month 35,36)
Organization of workshop - process • Organization of workshop were discussed at previous steering committee meetings • ISF Ciampino- 2nd SC meeting • University of Derby – 3rd SC meeting • Venue of two workshops – • 1st Workshop hosted by KUL Leuven • 2nd Workshop hosted by IRD Montpellier • No of participants limited to 15 • Establishment of Selection Panel - agreed at 3rd SC meeting
Workshop Organization - process • Preparation of announcement by IPGRI – endorsement of Selection panel • Announcement of the training workshops in December 2004 through: • IPGRI website • networks (regional, crop) • ECP/GR • Newsletters • CRYMCEPT Partners • Other organizations e.g. FAO • Individuals & Private sector.
Workshop Organization cont. • Receipt of applications – deadline 31 March 2005, extended to 8 April • Nos. of applications received • Leuven 22 • Montpellier – 31 • Policy makers -3 • Screening of the application by Selection panel according set criteria- agreed during 3rd SC meeting • Assessment form • Results were compiled and analysed
Workshop Organization cont. • The final list of candidates for both workshops were endorsed by panel • EU were also kept informed • Successful candidates were informed by 31st May 2005 • 20 nationalities – 40% European countries
Implementation of workshops • Preparation of the workshop programmes • Identification and invitation of resources persons – partners + outside • Logistic arrangements – thanks to hosting institutes • Hosting institutes –preparations for practical • Budget had funds only for 10 participants; requested for registration fees which helped to increase participation to 15 trainees.
Workshops • Two workshops – slightly different focus • Demands of participants better met • Different participants from same institute attending the two workshops
First Workshop held in Leuven Sept 05 completed • Good feed back from participants
Second Workshop • The second workshop will take place at IRD Montpellier from 10 to 21 October 2005
Cryopreservation Manual • No specific budget allocated to produce a manual • General recommendation for utilization of cryopreservation in germplasm collections – outcome of CRYMCEPT • Lessons learnt as a basis for our recommendation • Propose as a follow up – translate the results into a publication in next phase
