Case study: Slash and burn cultivation in Brazil • Facts • 8,514,877 km2 of land • 191m population • 22 people/km2 • Plentiful land, hence farming is extensive • Main crop is Manioc, used for flour, sugar and beer • Slash & Burn Agriculture refers to clearing of forests to create small farms • However, farming causes problems with the balance of soil, causing soil erosion and leachingduring heavy rains, hence losing fertility • Thus they shift to another part of the forest every 4-5 years, causing deforestation • Shifting cultivation requires large areas of land & lots of labour for very little yield
Case study: Slash and burn cultivation in Brazil • Another leading cause of deforestation is cattle ranching, which attributes to almost 70% of the rainforests cleared. • Cattle ranching is extensive, costing very little labour and capital but requires a huge piece of land. Growing cattle is not very efficient. • What is making it worse is that Brazil plans to double beef production by 2018.. • Another example of commercial farming wrecking havoc on the environment.
Case study: Commercial farming of Rice in Japan • Facts • 128m population • 378,000 km2 of land • 337 people/km2 • Very little flat land hence farming must be intensive • Main crops are rice, or wheat and soya during winter • Inputs • Machinery and technology to improve efficiency • Older workforce, as population of Japan is ageing and young people prefer not to work in farms • Land scarcity led to land reclamation in Northern Honshu to provide more farmland. • Rice in Japan is grown on a huge commercial scale and sold for own consumption
