Prologue-chapter 5 Beowulf Alexander british lit fall 2011
Act One Characters: • Be able to identify (know the lineage). • Beowulf (the hero) • Hrothgar • Grendel • Wulfgar
Question One: • What is the significance of Grendel being descended from Cain? • Cain was said to be a spawn from the serpent in the Garden of Eden. Upon murdering his brother, Abel, out of jealousy Cain was set to wander the Earth alone for eternity.
Questions Two: • Why does Grendel attack Heorot? • Grendel hears Hrothgar and men celebrating in Heorot. This angers him, and he becomes jealous.
Question Three • What does Heorot symbolize prior to Grendel’s attack? • Heorot symbolizes great success and happiness prior to Grendel attacking. However, after Grendel terrorizes the Danes, Heorot is a place of sadness and death.
Who is hrothgar’s lieutenant? • Wulfgar is Hrothgar’s lieutenant.
Why is the lieutenant concerned with the arrival of Beowulf and his men? • The Danes are always on guard to those from other clans. They fear the worst (war, attempted take over, attack..etc). However, the Lieutenant sees Beowulf as a hero just by his demeanor and stature. He allows him to see Hrothgar. It also helps that Beowulf is the son of Ecgtheowand nephew to Hygalec; both were friends of Hrothgar.
