Motif Small Town Life
Review-Motif • Motif: Reoccurring element in literature • Motif in TKAM: Small town life
Example 1 • “People said he went out at night when the moon was down, and peeped in windows” (Lee 10). • The town is small enough to have local “ghost” type stories. This is the case here with the various stories about Boo Radley. He is a “different” person in a small town and people don’t like that.
Example 2 • “Miss Caroline, he’s a Cunningham” (Lee 26). • In the small town of Maycomb, someone’s last name can tell you everything you need to know about them. This is what Scout tries to do when telling Miss Caroline that Walter is a “Cunningham.” However, she doesn’t understand because she is not from their town.
