Future Plans from 2006 • New Structure Magazine • Current Editorial Page budget is 360 p/y • Pages for features 72 p/issue (288 p/y) • Invitation to Vote in June 2006 issue! • Multimedia inclusion especially for educational duties. • Number of pages per article is an issue: we want to enforce page charges
Features Plans from 2006 • Special Issues Features: 5 art x 8 pages • 2 Extra Non Topical: 2 art x 8 pages • 1 Tutorial Paper: 8 pages + extra media (possibly in parts) • Practitioner corner: 3 pages (Students) • Educational Department: 1 page • Guest article of general interest, possibly not technical: 4 pages (Industry)
IEEE Multimedia • 1. How do we deal with print subscribers? • They would not have access to multimedia attachments. If they want access, they can buy a particular paper online. So, this means online purchases will include multimedia attachments. • 2. How do we promote multimedia to get more attachment/interest/usage? • IEEE wide. Take several good examples of papers that make good use of multimedia. Examples which have the links within the PDF. The selected papers will be made publicly available The goal is to have them by the end of October. • 3. Any updates on projected implementation date for the PDF link approach? • Late May is projected, but really the end of the second quarter.
IEEE Media Select (Thanks Roz!)
Advantages of Media Select • 16 sales offices worldwide w/ 19 sales reps • Reps attend conferences and trade shows at their expense • Represent 9 of the 13 magazines published by IEEE Magazines Department • (Computer and Communications Societies have their own publishing houses.) • Prominent exposure on IEEE webpage • One click from main IEEE pages takes you to Media Select. “Others” are buried on IEEE site • Strong ID w/ IEEE Brand
IEEE Media • Spectrum • Communications Society Magazines • IEEE Select Market Media • Recruitment Services (job ads) • Apparently includes all but 5 pubs that carry ads: • Industry Applications • Robotics and Automation • Electrical Insulation • Power Electronics Newsletter • Antennas & Propagation (EIC sells ads)
Computer Society Magazines Computer Security & Privacy IT Professional Internet Computing Pervasive Computing Computing in Sci. & Eng. IEEE Software Design & Test IEEE Magazines IEEE Microwave Signal Processing Control Systems Medicine & Biology Technology & Society Circuits & Systems EMC Instru. & Measurement Power & Energy VTS LEOS IEEE Select Market Media Pubs
What they do • Prepare and distribute media kits • Research society demographics • Compare w/ other mags so there is consistent pricing by circulation • Utilize joint database, frequent mass mailings and “email blasts” to potential advertisers • Offer package ad deals w/ complementary pubs, e.g. Control Systems and R&A • Attend trade shows and big conferences w/ many exhibitors -Sales reps are on commission only.
What they cost • Percentage of net revenue • Sales rep commissions 20% • Sales and marketing management 16% • Ad production and billing fee 12% • We already pay that • We also pay to produce and distribute media kits. • Contract on annual basis, must give them 6 months notice to cancel.
The Gamble • IEEE Magazine Sales Dept. believes (but will not guarantee) that they can double or more our ad revenues. They see robotics as hot! • Ad reps at trade shows will raise our profile in industrial community. • The risk--that the market is not there, that we are already reaching our potential advertisers.
Conclusions • Runs mainly on special issues • Schedule planned until september 2007 • New Plan and structure from 2006 • IEEE Media Program Could generate extra revenue
Motion 1 “Beginning with articles submitted after November 1, 2005, RAM articles will be subject to page charges. • Voluntarypage charges of $110 per page for the first 8 pages of all articles. Authors who honor the voluntary page will receive free reprints. • Mandatory page charges of $250 per excess page for articles which exceed 8 pages. Authors will be informed of these charges when they submit their papers, and will be given the option of shortening their papers, agreeing to honor the page charges, or withdrawing the paper. “
Motion 2 “We move that starting from 2006 the IEEE Robotics and Automation magazine will join the IEEE Media program for the management of its advertisments”
