PowerPoint 2007… It looks different and a little scary, but don’t worry! If this is the first time you’ve used PowerPoint 2007, I highly encourage you to take some time to explore the different menus. If you were familiar with PowerPoint 2000 or 2003, you’ll find it has all the same features, just in different places. If you have no experience with PowerPoint, and would like to meet me online through video conferencing, please email me to set up a meeting time. In addition, be sure to check out these instructor-led and FREE IT Workshops on PowerPoint.
Add a New Slide Once you have completed the first slide, you’ll need to add another one. From the HOME menu, click NEW SLIDE.
Selecting Slide Layout When you first select a new slide from the HOME menu, you can then decide on the layout for that slide. Click on LAYOUT and select from the menu choices. You can add, move, delete, and resize textboxes and graphics if needed.
Slide Transitions Once you have completed your 11 slides, you will need to add slide transitions between each slide. To do this select a slide from the “Slides” panel on the left. Then click on ANIMATIONS. Next select the transition you want by clicking on it from the horizontal menu. (For more choices, click the small arrow to the right). If you’d like to apply the same transition to all slides, be sure to select “Apply To All.” Be sure to specify the speed of the transition located to the right of your selections.
Template Backgrounds Templates can visually enhance your PowerPoint presentation. From the DESIGN menu, select a theme by clicking on it. Be sure to explore colors, fonts, effects, and background styles to personalize the template you selected. Be sure to use the small arrows to the right to scroll down to find more themes.
Solid Backgrounds and More From the DESIGN menu, click on the small icon next to the word “Background” in the lower right corner of the menu. Then you will be given an option to create a solid, gradient, picture, or texture filled background to your slideshow.
Multiple Backgrounds For this assignment you will be required to use multiple backgrounds. When you click on a theme, it will automatically change all the slides to that theme. In order to have multiple backgrounds, you’ll need to RIGHT-CLICK with your mouse on the theme. Then select “APPLY TO SELECTED SLIDES.”
Adding Clipart • To add clipart to your presentation, click on the INSERT menu. Then select CLIPART. • A menu will appear on the right. Search for the clipart you want, hit GO, scroll down for options, then click on the clipart you want to add to your slide. • In order to prevent distortion, do not over-enlarge clipart and resize it from the corners. Make sure your clipart is clear.
Add Animated Clipart To insert animated clipart, following these steps: Click the INSERTmenu, and select CLIPART. Type in the type of clipart you want under SEARCH FOR: Under the search feature, click the drop down arrow under RESULTS SHOULD BE: Check the box next to MOVIES, and click on the clipart. Note: Your clipart will only animate when the presentation is in SLIDESHOW mode. (Hit F5)
Inserting Pictures To insert a picture, select the INSERT menu. Then click PICTURE. When you insert a picture, you can use the PICTURE TOOLS to enhance it! By simply clicking on the image you inserted, you will see a FORMAT menu. Practice inserting a picture and exploring with the tools and features available. Adding Music Sounds To insert a music file, click on the arrow under SOUND and select SOUND FROM FILE. If you are going to play a sound file, please put your music in the same drop box. Otherwise, I may not be able to hear your music. Move the speaker icon off to the side so it doesn’t show up in your presentation.

Click ADD EFFECT and select from the choices. **Note: Animations only work in SLIDESHOW mode.
Custom Animations Timing Now that you have your custom animation, you can decide how you want to appear and when you want it to appear. Custom Animations with Sound • To insert a custom animation WITH sound, follow the following steps: • Select the animation you want to make sound. • Click the drop down box next to that animation. • Click EFFECT OPTIONS . • A box will appear, select the sound you want and click OK.
Timing Your Slideshow For this project you will set up your slideshow so that is runs automatically after 5-10 seconds. *When using this slideshow for your classroom, you will want to set this to 10 seconds or more, but for grading purposes five to ten seconds is efficient. Click the ANIMATIONS menu. Then under ADVANCE SLIDE, click “Automatically After” and select 5-10 seconds, depending on your needs. Be sure to also check the “ON MOUSE CLICK” button, too.
Looping Your Presentation To make your slideshow run continuously, click SLIDESHOW, then select SET UP THE SHOW. Place a check next to “Loop continuously until ESC.”
Viewing Your Slideshow Before you submit your project, be sure to test it out first! From the SLIDESHOW menu, you can view your entire slideshow from the beginning or start at the current slide. (Hint: Spell Check is located under the REVIEW tab.)
