  1. HSE Health, safety and environment

  2. Issues concerning HSE • Physical working environment • Ergonomics • Noise • Heat, fire • Work in high places, risk of falling objects or people • Mechanical dangers (rotating machinery, cranes lifting large items, hydraulic machines with much force) • Light, radiation • Chemical • Electrical

  3. Issues concerning HSE • Psychosocial issues • Colleagues and supervisors • Bullying • Mobbing • Work-related stress, for example due to long working hours • Job safety • Contract of employment • Unfair dismissal

  4. Issues concerning HSE • External environment • Gas pollution can affect climate globally and air quality locally • Liquids (oil and other chemicals) can have severe biological effects on wildlife • Solids

  5. Risk assessment • Identify the hazards • Identify who is affected by hazard, and how • Evaluate the risk • Identify and prioritise appropriate control measures

  6. Safety control measures • Technical design • Safety rules, routines and procedures • Supervision and employee education • Safe job analysis • Personal protective equipment

  7. Safety control measures First try to eliminate the hazard. Personal protective equipment should always be a last resort!

  8. Physical environment • Examples of design-related control measures • Explosion safety (EX) • Safety barriers (built-in equipment) • Automatic control systems • Serviceable installation • Anything else?

  9. Routines and procedures • Report accidents, mishaps and near-incidents (RUH in Norwegian) • ”Safety tours”: regular checks in our working area, where supervisor and one or two employees investigates the area and compare with a checklist • Procedures for dangerous working operations • Safe job analysis for any dangerous operation where there is no procedure • Routines for dealing with wastes and spillage

  10. Personal safety equipment • What do we need for these situations /operations? • General /common? • Work in high places • Welding and other hot work • Chemicals • Electrical • Noise
