  2. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) • Dec. 2009–2009 Edition published • Jan 15, 2012 – Effective date for compliance as well as supplements by State and Municipal DOTs. • May 2012 – Revisions 1 and 2 incorporated.

VA Supplement to the MUTCD • Revisions to VDOT developed Supplements: • VA Supplement to the 2009 MUTCD approved July 2013 • VA Work Area Protection Manual Effective for daily operations – January 1, 2015 Effective for projects advertised for bid – July 1, 2015 • VA Standard Highway Signs book (living document)

  6. Chapter 6A (and TTC-23.1) • Added definition, acronym and abbreviation for Portable Temporary Rumble Strips – PTRS (Chapter 6A) • Added notes and illustrated PTRS (TTC-23.1)

  7. Chapter 6C (also 6E, 6H & 6I) • Revised the 25 mph buffer space distance from "155-160" to "155-165" to match Tables in 2012 Guidelines for Temporary Traffic Control (“pocket guide”). • Tables 6C-2, 6E-1, 6H-3, and various TTCs’ and TIMCs’.

Chapter 6E • Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFAD) • Several revisions on the use of AFADs: • Redefined Methods 1 and 2 to require an AFAD at each end of the TTC zone; • Revised standard statement in Paragraph 14 to require two flaggers, one per AFAD, to operate AFADs for both Methods; • Replaced the Option statement in Paragraph 15 with a Standard statement requiring a single Flagger operating two AFADs to have an unobstructed view of both AFADs and approaching traffic.

  13. Chapter 6F – TTC Devices • Section 6F.03 Sign Placement • The legs of portable sign supports should be fully extended as well as flush as possible to the ground or roadway for stability • Legs that cannot be fully extended should be weighted with drum weights.

Fine For Exceeding Speed Limit When Flashing (R2-V1) Sign • Revised sign to comply with the 2012 General Assembly’s amendment to Section 46.2-878.1 • Also: “Flashing lights shall be remotely operated and activated when workers are present in the work zone.”

Chapter 6g – TTC Zone Activities • Section 6G.25 • Installing/Removing Temporary Traffic Control • Re-write of section to add clarity to guidance. • Added/revised guidance on shadow vehicles, traffic spotters, relocating advance warning signs, and TMA requirements. • Section 6G.27 • Work Zone Ingress/Egress Considerations • Added information on the application and size of the ingress/egress area.
