Current Tobacco Policy Current UT Policy: Smoking is not allowed within 30 feet of any building entrance
Gaining Student Support In spring of 2009 University Provosts moderated a student Tobacco Debate A petition with 1,000+ signatures requesting the campus become tobacco free was announced at the end of the debate In the fall of 2009 a vote was taken on whether the campus should go tobacco free
New Tobacco Policy Effective August 2011: Smoking will only be allowed in a few select areas on UT Campuses.
Why a Stricter Tobacco Policy? 20% of UT students smoke Healthy Campus goal is ≤10% 1 in 10 college students will die prematurely from tobacco use 223 colleges/universities have already enacted tobacco free policies ACHA recommends: 100% indoor and outdoor campus-wide tobacco-free environment.

Lessons Learned with the BOD Always be ready to advocate Sound bites & rebuttals Don’t get intimidated! Identify a champion BOD is a separate audience and requires customized education i.e.; Employee costs associated with tobacco use
Smoking Cessation Cost: Free to Students, Faculty, & Staff Availability: UT Medical Center and UT Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Aids: Depending on insurance & needs, various treatments are covered Support: Groups meet on a regular basis to assist in smoking cessation and ongoing preventative maintenance Reward Non-Smokers: Consider working with medical insurance providers to lower the cost of premiums for non-smokers
