"Launch Out into the Deep ..."

1. "Launch Out into the Deep ..." "... and let down your nets for a catch." (Luke 5:4)

2. Luke 5:1-4 So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.

3. Luke 5:1-4 Then He got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, "Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch."

4. "Launch Out into the Deep" These were experienced fishermen who had fished all night but without success. There is no reason to think that Jesus, as a man, had any experience at fishing, whatsoever. But, as Creator, He always knew whereof He spoke!

5. Luke 5:5 But Simon answered and said to Him, "Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net."

6. "Launch Out into the Deep" Though one in Simon's place might have thought that he knew more than a carpenter about fishing, Simon had confidence in the supernatural knowledge of the Master.

13. Judges 7:7-22 Then the Lord said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place." So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands.

14. Judges 7:7-22 And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, "Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand.

Judges 7:7-22 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, and you shall hear what they say; and afterward your hands shall be strengthened to go down against the camp." Then he went down with Purah his servant to the outpost of the armed men who were in the camp.

16. Judges 7:7-22 Now the Midianites and Amalekites, all the people of the East, were lying in the valley as numerous as locusts; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the seashore in multitude. And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion.

17. Judges 7:7-22 He said, "I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed."

18. Judges 7:7-22 Then his companion answered and said, "This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp." And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped.

19. Judges 7:7-22 He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, "Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand." Then he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet into every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and torches inside the pitchers.

Judges 7:7-22 And he said to them, "Look at me and do likewise; watch, and when I come to the edge of the camp you shall do as I do: When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, 'The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!' "

And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark.

It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. Moses failed in his first attempt to deliver Israel. But God sent him back to the same place. Likewise, the disciples let down their nets in familiar waters.

42. "Launch Out into the Deep" Failure was NOT attributed to personnel. Failing once is no reason not to try again . Men often become outstanding examples of success after repeated failure. Thomas Edison is an example of such. Likewise the disciples succeeded where, previously, they had failed.

43. "Launch Out into the Deep" How, then, was failure turned into success? Not a change of equipment, location or personnel, because none of these was the problem. It was a willingness to "do according to His word." Anyone can turn failure into success by doing "according to His word." Consider Israel at Ai.

44. Joshua 7:1-5 But the children of Israel committed a trespass regarding the accursed things, for Achan the son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took of the accursed things; so the anger of the Lord burned against the children of Israel.

Only its spoil and its cattle you shall take as booty for yourselves. Lay an ambush for the city behind it."

Then you shall rise from the ambush and seize the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.
