Background • “I will build my church” (Mt. 16:18) • “Tell it to the church” (Mt. 18:17) • “The Lord add to the church” (Acts 2:47) • “fear came upon the church” (Acts 5:11) • “elders in every church” (Acts 14:23) • “all the churches of the Gentiles” (Rom 16:4)
With the explosive growth of Christian churches all over SW Asia, Paul deals with the question, “what about Judaism, Israel (the people) and promised land?”
The Remnant of Israel Romans 10:21 - 11:1-10 Pg. 836 (pew Bible)
Paul addresses, “What is going to become of the nation that crucified their Messiah, the “anointed one” who was supposed to overthrow the Romans and reestablish the Davidic reign in Jerusalem?
Romans 11:1 • I say then, • Hath God cast away his people? This wasn’t the first time this question was asked? Consider Elijah
Romans 11:2 • God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew. • Wot [Know] ye not what the scripture saith of Elias [Elijah]? • how he maketh intercession to God against [NOT for] Israel, saying,
Romans 11:3 • Lord, they have killed thy prophets, and digged down thine altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life. All followers of God ask, “why do bad things happen to them?”
1 Kings 18-19 • Running for his life, • In fear of Jezebel’s wrath, • Hiding in a cave, • Elijah asks God—“Am I the only one left that serves and loves you?” Elijah is questioning God’s sovereignty in keeping His promises (covenants)?
Ultimate ? Can I trust God to fulfill His promises?
Romans 11:4 In response to questioning God’s sovereignty in keeping His promise to Abraham, God says: • “I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.”
Back to Paul Vs. 1
Romans 11:1 • I say then, • Hath God cast away his people? • [Answer—Exhibit #1] • God forbid. • For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
Exhibit #1 • Paul presents himself as the proof that God has NOT abandoned Israel. • If God had abandoned Israel, then why would God have sent His Son to knock Saul off of his horse and ask Him those hard, convicting questions that led to his repentance toward Jesus and faith in the gospel?
One Track • God does NOT have two parallel tracks of people going on simultaneously. Israel Church John Hagee
Romans 11:5 • Even so then [in the same way] at this present time also there is a remnant [small surviving group] according to the election of grace. Yes! It does appear that there are a lot of Gentiles getting saved; however, even now there are still Jews coming to Christ through faith in the gospel.
Election of Grace 1) What is Grace?
What is Grace? • The gift of God as expressed in his actions of extending mercy, loving-kindness, and salvation to people. • Grace is the dimension of divine activity that enables God to confront human indifference and rebellion with an inexhaustible capacity to forgive and to bless. • Tyndale Bible Dictionary
Election of Grace • The doctrine of election has two functions: it checks human independence and self-righteousness, and shows that in bestowing favor God is perfectly free (Eph. 1:1–6; 2 Tim. 1:9; Tit. 3:5). Every step in the process of the Christian life is due to grace—Gal. 1:15 (call); 2 Tim. 2:25 (repentance); Eph. 2:8–9 (faith). • New Bible Dictionary
Clarifying Grace • Romans 11:6 • And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. No Hybrids Allowed!
Romans 11:7 • What then? • Israel [the nation] hath not obtained that which he [it] seeketh for;
Biblical Fact • Just because you were a descendant of Abraham did NOT mean you were saved. • Just because you were a descendent of Isaac did NOT mean you were saved. • Just because you were a member of one of the 12 tribes of Israel (Jacob) did NOT mean you were saved.
Romans 4:3 • For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. • Galatians 3:6 • Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. • James 2:23 • And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Romans 11:7 • What then? • Israel [the nation] hath not obtained that which he [it] seeketh for; • but the election hath obtained it, • and the rest were blinded
Quoting from Isaiah 29:10ff Romans 11:8 • (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
In order that God’s will be accomplished some had eyes that could not see and ears could not hear.
Now Remember! These are NOT eyes that wanted to see or ears that desired to ears.
Romans 11:9-10 • David (in Ps 69:22–23) spoke of their feasts becoming snares and traps. Their celebrations proved to be hindrances and a retribution “rebounding as a boomerang upon them” (Amplified). • Their eyes were dimmed so they could no longer see, and their backs were continually bent under their burden (v. 10). Robert H. Mounce
Backs Bent from Burdens Matthew 23:1-37
King Jesus and Paul • Matthew 23:37 • O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Election by grace does not remove human responsibility.
Fundamental Truth • From Adam to the present, • all who have been saved, have been saved by GRACE through faith not of works • so that NO ONE could boast about their own contribution to their salvation.
What about Jews? What about Jews who crucified the Messiah?
Romans 11:11 • 11I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? Can they get up from this fall? Is the fall beyond recovery?
Romans 11:11 • I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? • God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy. This is a God-ordained Fall!
What Paul describes is God’s amazing ability to take sin (or what Satan means for evil) and turn it into good.
Romans 11:12 • Now if the fall of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing of them the riches of the Gentiles; • how much more their fulness? In the end, we will not determine we could have done it better.
Conclusion • Salvation [Election] by Grace never removes individual responsibility for rejecting Christ or mitigates human responsibility • Not only does God ordain the end, but He also ordains the means—which normally always includes human involvement
