Case 6.1, “Revolution Without Ideology”. What should a capitalist say about the employee take-overs in Argentina? Not the result of authoritarian decisions by the government. Not intended to achieve economic equality (nor do they). The means of production are still privately owned.

Case 6.1, “Revolution Without Ideology” • What should a capitalist say about the employee take-overs in Argentina? • Not the result of authoritarian decisions by the government. • Not intended to achieve economic equality (nor do they). • The means of production are still privately owned. • What should Rawls say? • It increases overall economic benefit in Argentina and also benefits the least advantaged. • The workers DID agree to it (though not exactly behind the veil of ignorance).
Case 6.6, “Poverty in America” • What should a capitalist say about poverty in America? • It is a fact that the lower end of the distribution in the United States is below the poverty level • It is probably the case that the economy cannot be raised so that ALL of the distribution is above the poverty level • There definitely is enough wealth in this country to raise everyone above the poverty level. • What should Rawls say about poverty in America? • The current pattern of distribution definitely does not benefit everyone. • It is hard to imagine all Americans accepting it at the original position and behind the veil of ignorance.
