Standards in Mathematics • What do you think about when you hear the term “standards?” • Do we need standards? If so, why?
Why do we need standards? • To set uniform expectations for students • To provide a basis for equal opportunity to learn • To ensure that students in other areas of the state or country are receiving a similar education
Why do we need standards? • To establish explicit criteria for a meaningful accountability system • To provide a foundation for defining the knowledge and skills teachers need in order to provide instruction for students
Standards for Creating Standards (AERA) Standards should … • Be grounded in core academic disciplines and should cover what students should know and be able to do • Address only the essentials • Not “prescribe” teaching methods, devise classroom strategies, or substitute for lesson plans • Crystal clear to everyone: students, parents and teachers
National Council of Teachers of Mathematics • Membership of NCTM • History of curriculum change • 1957 - Sputnik • 1960’s – new math • 1970’s – back to basics • 1980’s – development of standards
The NCTM Content Standards • Number and Operations • Algebra • Geometry • Measurement • Data Analysis and Probability
The NCTM Process Standards • Problem Solving • Reasoning and Proof • Communication • Connections • Representation
The NCTM Principles for School Mathematics • Equity Principle • Curriculum Principle • Teaching Principle • Learning Principle • Assessment Principle • Technology Principle

Developmentally Appropriate Practice …Applying child development knowledge in making thoughtful and appropriate decisions about early childhood program practices.
NAEYC Principles • Curriculum is consistent with current recommendations from professional societies and research on how children learn. • Curriculum address a broad range of content that is relevant, engaging and meaningful to students
