E N D
Read the question carefully: do not read the documents at this time • List the relevant facts / concepts: brainstorm • Plan a six paragraph outline: introduction with thesis statement, four body, conclusion • Now read the documents, analyze, and make a chart (doc #, topic, author, year, source, audience, tone/voice, main points of information, theme / thesis it can be used with) – try to fit it on one page
Plug in the documents to the outline – where do they fit; where can you use them • Revise the outline, if necessary, after analyzing the documents, to include important ideas / information you originally omitted, that the documents remind you of • All of the above should be completed in 15 minutes??? • Write the essay – you have 45 minutes to write it
Using this format, helps to incorporate more outside information, so that you are not too influenced by the documents only • Remember it’s an Essay, not an analysis of a series of documents….what are you going to argue, prove, defend….have a thesis etc… • You have to combine the information in the documents with just as much outside information
In the Essay reference the documents through the tags / labels - author, source, year.. etc…….and then cite the document at the end of the sentence… • do not write “In Doc. A”, but rather “In his letter to Congress, Jefferson argues that….then reference/cite clearly, in bold, at the end of the sentence. (DOC. A) ( make it stand out) • Paraphrase, summarize, or quote the information in the documents: if quoting, use short quotes only….
Essential Elements of a Good DBQ Essay • Introduction with thesis statement • Sufficient outside information • Use of all 8 documents • Blend, weave, outside information with information from the documents • A well developed thesis: it’s an Essay, not just an analysis of documents • Write a Conclusion • Address / answer the question throughout: be relevant
Take Home DBQ • Type the DBQ • Double Spaced, One Side, with page numbers….font 12 Times New Roman • Planning page on front (facts / concepts, 6 paragraphs)…hand written • Followed by Doc. Analysis Page • Staple essay to the back of these two pages • Should be a genuine, good effort – 4 or more pages; Your effort / work……. • Due Date?
