  1. 2.3 Solving multi-step equations I can solve multi-step equations in one variable.

  2. Here’s the process • Combine like terms • Distribute (if necessary) • Undo (use inverse operations) • Continue combining like terms as you go!

  3. Some examples • 5 = 5m – 23 + 2m • Combine like terms • 5 = 7m – 23 • Undo • 28 = 7m • 4 = m • **notice that there was no distributing to be done so we skip this step.

  4. Some examples • 4 – (3 – x) = 15 • No like terms to combine • Distribute the negative • 4 – 3 + x = 15 • 1 + x = 15 • Undo • x = 14

  5. practice • 11m – 8 – 6m = 22 • 3.5 – 0.02x = 1.24 • 10 • -8(2x – 1) = 36

  6. Writing and solving a multi-step equation • Martha takes her niece and nephew to a concert. Her niece wants 1 shirt and 4 bumper stickers, and her nephew wants 2 shirts. Bumper stickers are $1 each. Martha spends $67. How much does a shirt cost? • (s + 4) + 2s = 67 • s = 21, shirts are $21 each

  7. Assignment • ODDS ONLY • P.98 #11-33, 39-55
