  1. 2008 Information and Guidelines Sponsored by the Office of International Outreach and the Academy of Future Leaders Texas A&M University

  2. Conference Information Place: Donald L. Houston Center 200 Discovery Drive, College Station Date: Thursday, April 17, 2008 Time: 9 am – 3 pm Space: Availability is limited. Only the first one hundred students who submit projects will be able to attend. Note: Student projects must be postmarked by April 7 in order to be considered. Only students who submit projects may attend.

Why Attend? • Interact directly with Texas A&M students • Great learning experience • Opportunity to visit one of the nation’s premier public universities • Excellent addition to your college and scholarship applications • Visit the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum which has all new exhibits for the spring

  4. Tentative Conference Events • Exciting keynote guest speaker • Lunch is provided • Opportunity for students to display and present their projects • Breakout discussion sessions with Texas A&M students on important global issues • Awards ceremony • Tour of Bush Presidential Library (A more detailed itinerary will be provided when details are finalized)

  5. Student Requirements • Open only to students in grades 6 – 12. • Each student must participate in a global issues project either individually or as part of a team. (Requirements next slide) • All projects must be mailed or handed in person. Written projects should be printed off before they are sent, and multimedia projects should be burned to a disk and must function as received. • There are three parts to each submission: 1) Registration forms (one per student); 2) Project Submission forms (one per group);3) Project (either printed or burned to a disk). • These forms can be found on the worldroom (http://worldroom.tamu.edu) website. • Projects must be submitted by mail or in person, postmarked by April 7, to: Global Issues Conference Project Submission Annenberg Presidential Conference Center Office of International Outreach 1245 Texas A&M University College Station, TX 77843-1245

  6. Project Requirements Projects should be submitted by individuals or groups of size no greater than four students*. *A maximum of four students may attend per specific project. The only specific requirements of the project itself are: 1) The project must pertain to a global issue; 2) The project must be must be mailed in per directions in the previous slide. However, keep in mind the objective of the project is to help students to understand at least one global issue so that they can come prepared to be engaged in the breakout discussions during the conference.

Project Topic Suggestions Suggested Topics: • The Impact of Corruption • Disease and Epidemics: Global Killers • Causes of Poverty • Responsibility to Protect Against Genocide • Free Trade & Globalization • The War on Terror • Climate Change and Global Warming • Energy Resources for the Future • Genetically Engineered Food • Coping with National Disasters • Religious Radicalism • This list is non-exhaustive, pursue what interests you. • Look for helpful links at the World Room website in the near future. http://worldroom.tamu.edu

Project Format Suggestions Suggested Project Formats: • Research Paper • PowerPoint presentation • Original artwork • Original photography • Original video • Documentary • Some combination of the above or any other format that can be submitted through the mail. Be creative! • Note: If you submit a project for which you think your global insight is non-obvious, please use the project proposal (part of the project submission form) to clarify your content for the judges.

  9. Project Judging Guidelines • The project will be judged by a panel of qualified Texas A&M students and faculty based on: • Creativity/Originality • Global Insight • Relevance to an important Global Issue • Overall Quality A note on plagiarism: We take plagiarism seriously. Make sure to give credit to all resources you use in creating your project. Any plagiarism found will result in disqualification of the project and students involved will not be allowed to attend.
