KEY TERMS Boomtowns- Quickly growing towns Vigilance committees- Self-appointed volunteers who would track down and punish wrongdoers. Hydraulic mining- remove large quantities of earth and process if for minerals. Dry farming- was to plant seeds deep in the ground, where there was enough moisture for them to grow. Sodbusters- those who plowed the plains.
KEY TERMS • Open range- a vast area of grassland that the federal gov’t owned. • Long drive- but those that survived sold for 10 times the price they would have brought in Texas. • Barriors- Hispanics settled in neighborhoods. • Great Plains- grew steadily in the decades after the civil war. • Homestead- tract of public land available for settlement.
MINING LEADS TO STATE HOOD Mining also spurred the development of colorado, arizonia , the dakotas , and montana. After gold was discovered in 1858 in colorado near Pikes peak, miners rushed to the area, declaring “pikes peak or bust.” Many panned for gold w/o success and headed home, complaining of a “pikes Peaks hoax.”
