Interference. Remember: bigger amplitude means MORE energy!. Constructive Interference. Destructive Interference. The Principle of Superposition. When 2 waves interfere, the displacement that results in the medium at any location is the sum of the displacements of the 2 waves.

The Principle of Superposition • When 2 waves interfere, the displacement that results in the medium at any location is the sum of the displacements of the 2 waves. • Over-simplified: add the 2 displacements to find your net displacement.
Standing Waves • Occur when the reflected wave interferes with the generated waves in such a way that specific points along the medium seem to be standing still. • ENERGY IS STILL BEING TRANSMITTED
Remember that reflected waves become the inverse.
NodePoints on a standing wave that appear to have to be standing still and have no displacement. • Antinode Points in a standing wave that undergo maximum displacement.
Nodes are points of destructive interference. • Antinodes are points of constructive interference. • Nodes and antinodes should NOT be confused with crest and trough • Antinodes vibrate between a large upward and large downward displacement.
