Interference of Waves When waves arrive at the same place at the same time, interference occurs
Constructive interference - When identical parts of a wave overlap Ex: crest/crest, compression/compression • Build on each other • Also called reinforcement or In Phase
Destructive interference -when the opposite parts of a wave overlap • Cancel each other out • Crest/trough, compression/rarefaction • Also called out of phase
Unit 6 Waves/Sound • Resonance – when the frequency of a forced vibration on an object matches the natural frequency of that object. • Beats – effect that results when 2 tones of slightly different frequencies are sounded together. • Some overlap (louder) and some cancel (softer)

One Result of Superposition • Standing Wave: two waves travelling in opposite directions with the same wavelength and frequency
Standing Waves • The boundary conditions and speed of waves determine which frequencies are allowed. • The ends of the resonant cavity have forced nodes or antinodes
