  3. FETAC’s role • Recognise learner achievement • Provide access to certification - FÁS - NCVA - Fáilte Ireland • FETAC makes c.65,000 awards each year

  4. Role of Certification • Adds value to training • Provides a measure of success - for learners/employees - for employers • Focuses on the outputs rather than the inputs

  5. Benefits: Employee • Gives a real measure of progress • Can be used for further training • Formal recognition of skills • Builds confidence

  6. Benefits: Employer • Provides a quantifiable return • Helps focus company training requirements • Gives a competitive advantage • Can influence other employees to undertake training

  7. Future (Slide 1) • National Framework of Qualifications - Qualifications will be portable - Demand for certification will come from learner - Smaller ‘chunks’ of learning will receive certification - Training which previously wasn’t certified may be recognised eg special purpose, supplemental awards

  8. Future (Slide 2) • Clearer routes to certification opening up • Industry playing role in determining standards
