  1. Physiological Signal Simulator Méabh Malone 09547771 Electrical & Electronic Engineering National University of Ireland, Galway Project Supervisor: Dr. John Breslin

  2. Introduction • What is a physiological signal simulator? • Reproduces physiological signals • Compare healthy versus unhealthy signals • Analyse disease characteristics • Manipulate signals • Communicate with devices such as phones and monitors • Applications? • Medical training & education • Research & technology development • Sports & fitness

  3. Aims • Low cost • Easy to access • Select, reproduce and analyse signals • Intuitive • Provide feedback • Output data

  4. Project Breakdown • Physionet • The ECG • LabVIEW code • User Interface design • Output data Project Specifications Block Diagram

  5. Progress to Date • Study of the Heart and ECG • Selection and formatting of signals from Physionet • Reproduction of signals on LabVIEW • LabVIEW UI design

  6. Concepts of the ECG • Records electrical activity of the heart • In resting state muscles are negatively charged • P-QRS-T Complex • Changes occur with heart disease • Reference points Depolarisation Repolarisation

  7. Selection of Signals • Read data from Physionet files • Format files to only include relevant data • Save to format readable by LabVIEW Tasks Completed Physionet File

  8. Flowchart to Date • JKI State Machine • String based Queue State Machine • Allow user actions to determine next state

  9. LabVIEW UI to Date • Load signal from file • Heart Attack Simulation • Select Interval • Normal • P • QRS • P-R interval • Zoom and Scrollbar • Ok – Stops program User Interface User Options

  10. Project Plan • UI Improvements: • Include a List box • Read sampling frequency from file • Plot multiple ECG’s at the same time • Output to Hardware Amplifier or Bluetooth device • Research • Code • Testing of system • Identification of limits

  11. Conclusion • Help advance research and development of medical technology at NUI, Galway
