Specific objectives of prison education • Creation of preconditions for lifelong learning • Development of study skills • Getting of academic knowledge • Getting of social skills • Self- sensing
A brief review of the school history • Up to 2005- Tallinn Vocational School nr. 5 (state school). • After accepting the document named “ Educational Arrangement in Prison. Developmental plan for 2004-2006” in Estonia, which foresaw transferring teaching of inmates under the coordintion of regional educational institutions, Tallinn Adult Gymnasium started to provide for teaching in Tallinn Prison. • Since 2011 Tallinn Adult Gymnasium is arranging general education also in Harku Prison.
The organization of learning process • School has six classrooms, including computer lab and music class. • Prison department employs annually about 18 teachers. • Teaching takes place in both Estonian and Russian languages. • Teaching is based on the state curriculum for basic and secondary schools. • Due to a small number of students teaching takes place in united classes.

Learning activities exemplified by: • Dramas ( M. Gorki “ The Lower Depths”, national epic “Kalevipoeg”) played by students. • Guest lectures in lessons. • Open lessons. • The use of IT resources in lessons. • Individual approach to learner`s needs (piano teaching, language consultancy etc).
Outward activities • TG has been the initiator of education-related activities. Seminars: • 5.01.2007- “Difference of the nature of prison work”.. • 2.03.2007- “Team development seminar for prison workers”. • 4.01.2008- “ How a person learns”. • 11.12.2008- Development seminar of prison education. • 9.01.2009- “ Working with difficult clients (students)”. • 7.01.2010- Cooperative seminar “Education in prison”. • 18.02.2011- Cooperative seminar for prison teachers “Motivative communication”.
Outward activities • Since 2009 Tallinn Upper Secondary School for Adults participates in the project of prison education „Effective Induction for Prison Teachers“ . • TG implements the Internet environment for prison teachers in VIKO. • Cooperate partner in international project of dyslexia among adult students “Breaking Barriers” (2010-2012).

Our Future It is planned on: • Arrange teaching through videoconferences for those who can not attend school for various reasons (the prohibition of prison, for health reasons etc) but they have a desire to learn. • Identify students with reading and writing difficulties at the beginning of the school year. • Arrange educational support for students with learning difficulties. • Upgrade the technological learning environment in the prison department of TG. • Continue constructive team-work with Tallinn Prison.
