WHAT IS DAP? The Italian prisons are managed by the DAP. The Department of Penitentiary operates under the Ministry of Justice, it has the following skills: •implementation of the policy of order and security in the P.I.; realization and prison services of treatment measures for the detainees and internees, as well as convicted inmates and eligible for alternative measures to detention; •technical and operational coordination, management and administration of the staff and external collaborators; •management of the technical support for the general needs of the Department.
Italianprisons In Italy there are 206 Penitentiary Institutes. In these Institutes there are three different types of prisoners: defendants sentenced internees
ARTICLE 27 OF THE ITALIAN CONSTITUTION The law that disciplines the life in prison is the 354/1975. Article 1: The treatment is personalized, in relation to the specific conditions of the subjects. Article 15: The treatment of the offender is primarily based on education, work, religion; it consists of cultural, recreational and sport activities, in order to facilitate proper contacts with the outside World, above all the relationship with the family.

The prison Educator has the following functions: • management of recreational, sport, cultural, educational activities; organization of the work inside and outside the prison; • collaborations with external entities (universities, schools, associations, etc.) • coordination of voluntary prison; • advice to the Supervisory Judge, necessary for the evaluation of measures different from the detention, for the ones who keep a "regular behaviour"

Conclusion Through this training course in Malta, the Italian Department of Prison Administration aims to create a network of collaborations with international partners for the spreading of best practice and the creation of international projects of rehabilitation of the prisoners.
