Why We Can Trust the Bible because God has protected His Word
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 2 Timothy 3:16 reproof—wrong conduct correction—wrong doctrine
Old Testament Those books quoted by Jesus and the Apostles Compiled around 450 BC by Ezra
The Early Writings Some were considered the Canon of Scriptures “canon” means a reed, and the reed was used to measure things. We get our word “cane” from this word. Canon—those documents that measured up.
The Early Writings Some were considered the Canon of Scriptures Shepherd of Hermas Epistle of Clement Didache "Teaching of the Lord to the Gentiles (or Nations) by the Twelve Apostles"
7 Concerning Baptism 7:1 Concerning baptism, you should baptize this way: After first explaining all things, baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, in flowing water. 7:2 But if you have no running water, baptize in other water; and if you cannot do so in cold water, then in warm. 7:3 If you have very little, pour water three times on the head in the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. 7:4 Before the baptism, both the baptizer and the candidate for baptism, plus any others who can, should fast. The candidate should fast for one or two days beforehand.
New Testament A direct connection with the Apostles Mark was the Gospel of Peter Luke was intimately acquainted with the Apostles, especially Paul
New Testament Apostolic authorship A long history of being read in the Church An innate Authority as of the Word of God Consistent message about the nature of God
New Testament The Church did not decide if a book was authoritative. Rather, because of the authority of a book (document) the Church accepted it as Scripture.
Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. Colossians 4:16
15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. 2 Peter 3:15, 16
20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1: 20, 21
The Procedure Books were gathered into collections. The Gospels were probably first, followed by the letters (epistles). The books were read as part of the worship service. Some were recognized as having the authority of the Holy Spirit within them. The collections grew. Some books were recognized as having the authority of the Apostles and the authority of God.
The Procedure As early as AD 95, Clement of Rome listed 8 books. By 108 Polycarp, a disciple of John, listed 15 books.
The Procedure Around 150 AD Justin Martyr stated that on Sundays in the Christian worship assemblies the “memoirs of the Apostles” were read together with the “writings of the prophets.”
The Procedure In 327 Athanasius from Alexandria list the 27 books of the New Testament as those accepted, just as we have them today.
The Procedure Letters were written by the Apostles. Traded among churches. Copied to make them more available. Somebody began collecting the Gospels and the Letters. A body of material was formed.
Around 140 Marcion challenged the content of the New Testament Gnostic teacher Rejected anything Jewish Did not accept the Old Testament No Gospels except part of Luke 10 letters of Paul Virtually worshipped Paul Said, “This is the New Testament”
How can we accept Paul’s letters as the Word of God without endorsing Marcion’s false teaching? What was the Apostolic bridge between the Gospels and the Letters? between the Old Testament and the Gospels and Letters?
What are some things we wouldn’t know if we did not have the Book of the Acts of the Apostles? Gospels Epistles THE OLD TESTAMENT
Marcion illustrated the need for a New Testament based upon the authority of Jesus and the Apostles, and based upon the authority and history of the Old Testament.
Around 160 Montanus challenged the NT again 2 prophetesses—Maximilla and Prisca. Taught that opposition to him was blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Claimed the right to push Christ and the Apostles aside. Church leaders saw the need to keep Christ central, the Scriptures founded on the teaching of Jesus Christ and the Apostles.
What goes in the New Testament? Apostolic authorship. A long history of being read in the churches. An innate Authority of being the Word of God. A consistent message about God’s love for his people. This is what made a writing Holy Scripture.
No church council can make the books of the Bible authoritative. The books of the Bible possess their own authority.
Why Can We Trust the Bible? because of the vast quantity of ancient manuscripts and the intense efforts of both friends and foes to evaluate their AUTHENTICITY. God allowed in what He wanted in, and kept out what He wanted kept out.
