  1. Hillbilly music

  2. The descendants of white Americans come from many different countries. Hundreds of years ago, European explorers discovered North America, and eventually started sending settlers across the ocean. These settlers came from countries such as England, France, Germany, Spain, and Holland. Characteristics of white American folk music

  3. The main type of song of the settlers was the ballad. This is a song that tells a story over several verses, and deals with common themes such as love and hate, victory in battles, or disasters. The story is the important part of the ballad, and is one of the ways that historical events were passed down through generations. These were solo songs, often accompanied by acoustic guitar or banjo. The Skillet Lickers The Wreck of Old 97 - 1926 The Ballad

  4. Other types of songs included: Work songs Nonsense songs Seasonal songs Lullabies Entertainment songs Dance tunes (often based on Irish or Scottish jigs)

  5. In the cities of the early colonies, the musical traditions of Europe were closely followed. In the rural areas, old songs were sung in the old ways. These people were often looked down upon as uncultured hicks, and were nicknamed hillbillies. City vs. rural

  6. By the 1900's, folk music was common throughout the rural sections of the South. When many people migrated north to work in the factories during World War I, they brought the old songs and styles with them. Radio and the recording industry considered hillbilly music unworthy of production. World war i

  7. The first country-music record was recorded in 1922 by Eck Robertson and Henry Gilliland. Sallie Gooden - 1922 Record companies began combing the South for new talent, going as far as to set up studios in barns and warehouses. First recordings

  8. The songs of these country performers came from traditional Anglo-American Ballads. Instruments included the guitar, banjo, and fiddle, with a piano or mandolin sometimes added in.

  9. Hillbilly music was first heard on the radio in 1922, starting in Atlanta, Georgia and Fort Worth, Texas. In 1924, a Saturday night program call the Barn Dance was aired out of Nashville, Tennessee. This name was later changed to the Grand Ole Opry, and is still going strong today. Early programs played mostly instrumental music, with string bands and ballad singers occasionally being featured.

  10. Two general styles emerged in hillbilly music - country music and mountain (or bluegrass) music. Mountain music consisted of the older songs and ballads performed in the traditional ways. Country music borrowed more from the style of current popular music. Hillbilly changes directions

Jimmie Rodgers - forced to retire from the railroad in 1925 because of tuberculosis Joined a minstrel troupe playing guitar and banjo He was discovered by an agent from RCA Victor records after he settled in Asheville, NC By the end of 1927, he was a rising star His yodeling style of singing, which was born from blues influences, made him the most popular singer in country music Died at age 36 from his illness, but left behind a legacy T For Texas - 1928 Jimmie rodgers

  12. One of the most influential people in creating the 'Country & Western' image Musical career began by listening to and learning songs by the top stars Lost his job as a telegraph operator in 1929, RCA Victor was selling his songs by the end of the year Autry became the image of the singing cowboy in the minds of millions Career expanded to Hollywood, giving hillbilly music a national audience, exploding as country and western The Last Round Up - 1933 Gene Autry

  13. The typical western ensemble of the period included the classic hillbilly fiddle and guitar combination, but added a string bass and often an amplified Hawaiian steel guitar. Country & Western

  14. As with WWI, WWII brought many people from the south to work in the factories in the north. Black people brought the blues to the cities, where it became rhythm and blues. White people brought hillbilly music, where it also picked up urban sophistication to appeal to a new market. World war ii

  15. By this time, all country groups had adopted the western garb, and instruments were fixed into a fiddle, guitar, string bass ensemble, with the banjo, steel guitar and drums common additions. The country song and style had secured a permanent place on the American music scene. Ernest Tubb I’m Walking the Floor Over You - 1961
