Objectives for the Oral Health Improvement MCN Group • To improve oral and dental health across all sections of the population in Grampian • Minimise the impact of oral disease on health and well being of the population
Supporting Actions • Establish a multi-disciplinary Oral Health Improvement MCN Group. • Complete an assessment to establish current oral health promotion provision in Grampian. • Identify gaps in provision, prioritise and make recommendations to MCN Project Board. • Provide support and guidance for all national and local initiatives, particularly the implementation of Childsmile in Grampian. • Ensure that all activity links with other MCN groups, primary care and public health to ensure partnership working across projects
Next Steps MCN Core Group now restructured to take forward action plan: Steering group • Finalise action plan for 2012 - 2014 • Provide strategic guidance & decisions • Forum for discussion on the effective and efficient delivery of the action plan • Monitor performance including budgetary spend • Provide direction and leadership to the operational group. Operational group • Provide leadership to implement activity and make decisions around development, implementation and delivery of actions • Monitor progress against the action plan • Form short life working groups to take forward specific pieces of work
Improving Oral Health for Children • Childsmile • Children’s Hospital • Promoting Child Dental Health in Hospital Good Practice Guidelines • Dental nurse based in hospital • School’s Project • Links to Health Promoting Schools & Curriculum for Excellence • Teeth TLC resources & website • Secondary School Programme • To include transition periods P7 to S1 and preparing to leave school
Childsmile Core Tooth brushing Programme Nurseries • 288 (82%) nurseries tooth brushing • 9,061 children brushing every day Primaries • 83 toothbrushing with P1 & P2 (some whole school) • 4,157 children brushing everyday Special Needs Schools • All special needs schools in Grampian supported by OHI team and running a tooth brushing programme
Childsmile CoreDistribution Programme • Toothbrush and toothpaste pack & weaning cup via health visiting teams before first birthday • Toothbrush and toothpaste pack to all nursery children twice year & to P1 children once a year • Toothbrushes and toothpaste for Tooth brushing Programme • Toothbrush and toothpaste packs for distribution via Childsmile Practice • Toothbrushes for tooth brushing demonstrations as part of Childsmile Practice.
Childsmile Nursery & School • Aimed at children aged 3 and upwards who are at increased risk of dental decay. • Targets priority nurseries and primaries in areas with highest levels of deprivation. • Twice yearly application of fluoride varnish by Childsmile dental teams in nursery and school. • Delivery of oral health promotion and health education messages.
Childsmile Practice • Promotes oral health from birth and targets families with young children. • All newborn children are offered opportunity to join the programme • Referral into programme by health visitor and linked to dental health support worker who provides regular support. • Linked to family friendly Childsmile practice for regular oral health promotion and clinical prevention services.
Improving Oral Health for Adults • Teeth TLC – Grampian population • Caring for Smiles – care homes and receiving care at home • Healthy Working Lives to promote workplace oral health • Young adults – leaving school, going to university or college
Vulnerable Groups National strategy and funding provided to address inequalities in oral health for vulnerable groups including: • Looked after children • care homes • drug users • Homeless • special needs • prisoners
Vulnerable Groups – Action Plan Improve: • Access to dental services • Consistency of oral health messages • Training and support for dental professionals Implement: • Care pathways • Tooth brushing & healthy eating programmes • Training for staff/carers who work/live with groups • Provision of oral health resources
