C U B E STRATEGY • Circle the numbers • Underline the units • Bracket the question • Eliminate unnecessary information
CUBE strategy example • A taxi company charges a $3 set fee per ride plus 50¢ for each minute the ride lasts. The company uses the expression 3 + 0.5m to calculate the cost of a ride in dollars, where m stands for the number of minutes the ride lasts. [What is the cost of a ride that lasts 50 minutes?]
KNOCSTRATEGY • What do I KNOW (what is given) • What do I NEED to know (question) • What OPERATIONS are involved to solve • What COMPUTATIONS are necessary • Note: students make four columns to record the information in.
KNOC strategy example • The distance around a track is ¼ mile. Sheila runs 9 miles each day. So far, she has run 5 miles around the track. How many more times must she run around the track to complete here 9 miles?
KNOC in action • Know(1 time around is ¼ of a mile…she runs a total of 9 miles…she has ran 5 miles so far..she has 4 miles to complete) • Need (How many more times around the track equals 4 miles) • Operations (subtraction, division, multiplication, addition is also possible) • Computations (9 miles - 5 miles= 4 miles left… 4 ÷ ¼ = 4 x 4/1 = 16) or (1 mile = ¼ + ¼ + ¼ + ¼or 4 times around, therefore 4 miles X 4 times around = 16 times around)
