  3. Training Goals This training aims to refresh waste generators on recognizing, proper storage, and proper disposal of special office wastes. “Special Office Waste” is a generic term for waste found in an office setting that requires special handling and disposal considerations.

  4. Special Office Waste What are special waste streams found in an office? • Batteries • Printer cartridges • Lamps/light bulbs • Old electronics • Aerosols • Sharps/broken glass • Empty containers

  5. Battery Storage and Disposal Batteries to save and give to US&A for recycling • Nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride • Lead acid, lead gel cell • Lithium, Lithium ion Alkaline Batteries go in the trash • It is very expensive to recycle alkaline batteries and the landfill considers them an acceptable waste. All other batteries are recycled for free. Battery disposal and storage tips • Tape terminals (a must with Lithium/Lithium Ion) • Do not store for long periods of time • Call Environmental Protection for battery pickup

  6. Printer Cartridges Disposal • Larger cartridges can usually be sent back to the manufacturer at no cost. • Save box and shipping labels • When shipping label is on the box, give to campus mail. • No label, no campus mail • Smaller cartridges may be accepted by charities. • Save the Lanier toner containers • Pick up by Print & Copy Services • US&A will pick up any wayward cartridges for recycling.

  7. Lamps • Fluorescent lamps contain mercury • Tube lamps contain about 4mg of mercury • Do not emit mercury when kept intact • Some lights may also contain lead (HIDs) • Incandescent bulbs do NOT contain mercury • DO NOT CHANGE YOUR OWN LAMPS! • UWM as trained staff to change bulbs • We recycle all lamps Not changing your own lamps refers to those in the ceiling or lamps requiring some extra equipment. It is perfectly acceptable to change a desk table lamp on your own.

  8. Old Electronics Old electronics should be put on a surplus list. • Fill out surplus declaration through Facilities Services • All electronics will be picked up by Facilities and sold if possible. • Not everything with a cord is e-waste.

  9. Aerosol Cans If not empty, aerosol cans may be considered hazardous waste. The propellant may be flammable or the material itself may behazardous. However, if the cans are empty, they can be recycled. • Environmental Protection will collect all aerosol cans • We puncture the can and empty the contents • Empty cans get recycled. By puncturing the cans, we are guaranteed that all the material will be emptied from the can.

  10. Needles Razors Syringes X-acto Knives Lancets Sharps The following items are considered Sharps and must go in a Sharps Container. Although they may have sharp edges, jagged metal, broken glass, or sharp plastic are not considered sharps and should not go in a Sharps Container

  11. Broken glass, jagged metal and sharp plastic can be disposed through the following steps. Broken Glass • Place in a sturdy cardboard box or puncture proof container • Label box “BROKEN GLASS” • Tape box closed • Place out by normal trash

  12. Hazardous Material Empty Containers • When a container is empty • Deface the label • Mark container as empty • Add absorbents to dry residue liquid • Leave lid off to show it is empty • Throw out in normal trash • It is recommended that these types of containers not be recycled due to residual material still in the container. • Remember, residue equals empty. If you have any questions, ask US&A Empty containers that once held hazardous material are not hazardous themselves.

  13. Miscellaneous Office Waste • Surplus • Computers, electronics • Furniture • Equipment Fill out surplus list. Movers will pick up items. No more bins. • “Techno Trash” • Microfiche, CDs, DVDs, video & audio tapes. • Recycled through Green Disk • Collection at Library • Contact Kim Silbersack Library Facilities Manager

  14. Household Hazardous Waste UWM is responsible for waste generated on UWM property only. • Do not bring household hazardous waste to work • MMSD sponsors waste collections called Clean Sweeps • See website for collection dates and times • http://v3.mmsd.com/HHW.aspx

  15. Office Waste must be stored in an Office Waste Accumulation Area. Accumulation areas make it easier for co-workers and Environmental Protection to locate waste. Label a box and place in appropriate area of the office Closets Cabinets Lower shelves Collect and Store
