The Design Process • Initial Problem or Project • Constraints • Initial Designs • Collaboration • Agreement of Assembly • Design of Base • Design of Components
The Project: Design a desk organizer with interchangeable parts. Constraints: all components must be able to attach to different base units. Must have 5 components on base unit
Collaboration • Initial collaboration was done via Skype • Additional communication • Cell Phone • Text Messages • Email • Share Drive with 1 working word document
Example Peg Depth of peg would be .5 “ tn Diameter would be .25” tn Spacing on base would be .75” up and down and across tn
Arrangement of holes for base unit. Tb. 1/29/10 Lool L Looks good. I am using a base dimension of 12 x 8.5 with height of 1 all in inches Pegs off accessories diameter .25, length .5 , is this what you wanted? tn We should also state a maximum length of pin that the base will accept. I would say that the base should be able to accept a pin that is no longer than .75”. That means there should be a clearance on the back side of each hole of at least .75”. tbb
Design Matrix Criteria used to design interchangeability: Cost Geometry Packaging Function Reliability Manufacturability
Ideas • Hook and Loop • Taper effect • Insert • Peg
And the winner is…………. Peg And Hole
Individual Components Base 1
Individual Components Base 2
Interchangeability All five components on Base 1 will be on Base 2
