Essay Writing Introductory Lesson, Moccia
Beginning Facts • Writing is communication; therefore, all rules/guidelines are in place in order to make you a better, more mature, more persuasive, and/or more complex communicator • All essay writing is essentially persuasive; you are trying to convince the reader of something
Guidelines/Rules • Some middle-school guidelines I may ask you to throw away • I may add some more guidelines • Sometime you need to learn to write according to rules before you can break them well • Picasso • Sentence fragments
Thesis • Definition: 1-3 sentence statement the argument (point/message) of the essay is, and how it will be argued • Location: end of opening paragraph • Road map of the essay • CLARITY
Thesis Questions • Why is the thesis the most important piece of an essay, initially? • Why should it be in the opening paragraph? • Why should your thesis be the first thing you write?
Things to Avoid in Thesis-Creation • Confusion or Vagueness – Err on the side of simplicity • Grammatical Errors – They undermine the intellectual persuasiveness of the writing • Broadness – Remember how much space you have to prove your point • Obviousness or Stating a Simple Fact – the thesis should be your personal argument
What’s wrong with these? • Batman is the best superhero • “Most Dangerous Game” is a compelling suspense story about hunting humans. • “Cask of Amontillado” explores the deeply psychological, and sociological, issues of personal and relational effects of repression, doubt, depression, and psychotic behavior.
