  2. Figurative Language • A literary device is a technique an author use to affect the reader. • One common device is figurative language, or words that mean something other than their literal meaning.

  3. Simile A simile is a comparison of two things using the word like or as. “The stars glittered like diamonds”

  4. Metaphor A metaphoris a direct comparison of two things without using the word like or as. “Christopher is a fish in the water”

  5. Extended Metaphor An extended metaphor is a metaphor used throughout a text and which is central to the text’s meaning. For example, in the poem “Identity” by Julio NoboaPolanco, the author compares herself to a tall, ugly weed. “Let them be flowers…” I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed”

  6. Hyperbole Hyperbole is an exaggeration made to emphasize a point. “That speech lasted ten years”

  7. Personification Personificationis giving human qualities to nonhuman things. “The campfire hissed angrily as we doused it with water”

  8. Oxymoron An oxymoron is a phrase that combines two contradictory words. Original copy Definite maybe Alone together Seriously funny Open secret Jumbo shrimp
