Problem Selection Group Brainstorm “Gee, I hate it when…” • My pool overflows because the water hose has been left on • My speakers blow out • Employees cheat their time card entries • Taking roll can be a hassle • Steering wheel gets extremely hot in sunlight • Backpacks are too heavy • It’s hard to keep track of money going through a business • Rolling up yarn is time consuming • Pools lose their chemical balance • Trash bag ends fall into the trash can • Keys don’t work easily • When my reverse sensor beeps for no reason (ice) • When fuses are blown and you don’t know it • It is difficult to back a boat into a garage • When dumpsters are emptied by trucks and don’t auto-lock (like they’re supposed to) and get filled up with other people’s trash. • I forget to shut the garage door *possible problems worth solving
Problem Selection Class Brainstorm • Animals/Pedestrians vs. Bicycles • Are you parked correctly garage/parking spot • Cross traffic blind spots • Solder sucker – Hard for 1 person to use • Falling asleep at the wheel • Recycling – no one does it. Why? • You cannot tell sound direction in water • Wobbly tables • Pools, hot tubs, and bath tubs overflow • Hard to open doors with hands full • Hail damage to unshielded cars • Drop cloths move/shift while painting • Wind damage/tornado survival • What size socket do you need • Collect debris from trimmed shrubs • Taking attendance • Backpacks • Mirror vibration in cars
Problem Selection Problem Selection Primary: Pools overflow because people forget the water is on. Backup: People leaving their garage door open
Problem Selection “Pools Overflowing” Existing Solutions and Justifications
Problem Selection Problem Selection New Problem Selection “Pools overflow because people forget the water is on” • Too many existing solutions • Not enough justifications New Problem “People leaving their garage door open”

Topic Background Contact Script Contacting an Expert • WHITNEY • Parker Hi! My name is Whitney. I am a student attending Moore Norman Technology Center for Pre-Engineering, and I was wondering if I could use a minute of your time to tell you about a problem I’m working on. We have to take a project through the entire engineering design process, and I’m searching for experts to tell me if this problem is justified. This is where you would come in. It would be great if you allowed me to occasionally contact you if I have questions about the problem or if I’m stuck in a corner. My problem is that ‘Crimes of opportunity are created when homeowners forget to close their garage door.’ Thank you for your time. Hi, my name is Parker Lusk. I am a senior in the Pre-Engineering program at Moore-Norman Technology Center where we are working on an Engineering Design and Development capstone project. Our goal is to identify a project worth solving and to develop a solution using the engineering process. The problem my partner and I have chosen is that crimes of opportunity are created when homeowners forget to close their garage door. We have identified you as an expert in [their field], and seeing as our project may include aspects in [their field], we were wondering if it would be possible for us to contact you throughout the semester through email correspondence and perhaps brief telephone calls if and when questions arise. Thank you for your time and look forward to hearing back from you.
