  2. Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary Assassinated in 1914 by a Serbian nationalist

  3. Austria-Hungary, blamed the Serbian government for the attack and hoped to use the incident as justification for settling the question of Slav nationalism once and for all. • As Russia supported Serbia, an Austro-Hungarian declaration of war was delayed until its leaders received assurances from German leader Kaiser Wilhelm, that Germany would support their cause in the event of a Russian intervention–which would likely involve Russia's ally, France, and possibly Britain as well. • On July 28, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, and the tenuous peace between Europe's great powers collapsed. Within a week, Russia, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Serbia had lined up against Austria-Hungary and Germany, and World War I had begun.

  4. The United States made a formal declaration of war on April 6, 1917 against Germany. • The first United States troops arrived in France on June 27, 1917. • Later, men ages were 21 - 31 were selectively drafted (conscripted) into the military starting on June 27, 1918. Secretary of War, Newton D. Baker, pulled numbers out of a fishbowl. • In August 1918, "the limits of the draft age were lowered from twenty-one to eighteen and raised from thirty-one to forty-five."

  5. Camp Beauregard • A military draft led to a large army • To support the army several new bases were built- Camp Beauregard was made from former National Guard base Camp Stafford • Many Louisiana men responded to the call to arms • Many descendents of French Creoles wanted to help France

  6. World War I, ended on November 11, 1918.
